Helen L. Stendel, 90, of Owatonna, died Sunday, February 10, 2013 at the Owatonna Care Center, after a brief illness.

She was born March 12, 1922 in Meriden Township, Minnesota the daughter of Edward and Elsie (Ochs) Sexter.

Helen attended country school and then worked at Kelly''s Department Store in Owatonna. She married Norbert Stendel May 12, 1943 at St. John Lutheran Church in Owatonna and the couple farmed together in Meriden Township. Norbert died in 2003. Helen was a member of St. Paul''s Lutheran Church in Meriden where she was active with Sunday school and the Lutheran World Relief Projects. Helen was also known as the “Neighborhood Grandma”, being very kind hearted and would help anyone. She also enjoyed cooking, baking, and having plenty of food for everyone to eat. She was known as the anonymous “Granny” writing in the former Owatonna Post Newspaper.

She is survived by her children Beverly (Dennis) Heaney of Somonauk, IL, Cheryl (Dave) Becher of Morristown, Curt (Sue) Stendel of St. Francis, Brenda Johnson of Faribault, and Brian (Sue) Stendel of New Richland. She is also survived by eleven grandchildren, twenty four great grandchildren, one sister Florence Hacmac, and a brother in law Ray Pelinka both of Owatonna, and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Norbert, three sisters Elvera Mueller, Lenora Pelinka, and Lucille Dobberstein, son in law Greg Johnson, and three great grandchildren Abigail Maendel, Faith Stendel, and John Harper.

Visitation will be at Michaelson Funeral Home on Friday February 15, 2013 from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM and at St. Paul's Lutheran Church Meriden on Saturday from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM. Funeral services will be held Saturday February 16, 2013 at 11:00 AM at St. Paul's Lutheran Church with The Reverend Gary Rusinko officiating. Interment will be in the St. Paul's Lutheran Cemetery. Memorials are preferred to St. Paul''s Lutheran Church.
