Alice Gwendolyn Helgeson, 100, of Kenyon, died Wednesday, March 14, 2018 at Kenyon Sunset Home. She was born May 9, 1917 in Goodhue County, Minnesota, the daughter of Edward and Emma (Kispert) Hildebrandt. She married Melvin Helgeson on December 22, 1935. Alice and Melvin farmed in rural Nerstrand and later moved to Kenyon. Alice was a homemaker and also worked at the Clothing Doc and Vermilyea's on Kenyon's main street. As a homemaker, she maintained a huge garden every summer, generating a marvelous stockpile of canned goods for her expansive basement pantry. Her faith was very important to her, serving on numerous committees at the United Methodist Church of Kenyon while she was able to be an active member. She was also a member of the Order of the Eastern Star. Alice was a 17-year resident of the Kenyon Sunset Home. There, she nurtured other residents while receiving the most amazing care from a staff dedicated to the special needs of aging seniors. The family has so much appreciation for the love and special attention provided to Alice. She is survived by her children Sharon (Harley) Kitzman of Pringle, South Dakota and Mark (Marcia) Helgeson of Faribault, grandchildren Scott (Sylvia) Helgeson, Brenda (Larry) Tischler, Shanon Kitzman, Chad Kitzman, Mindy Kitzman (Rich Rathke), Seth, Jack and Abbey Helgeson. She is also survived by 7 great-grandchildren; one sister, Ruth Jacobson of Faribault and daughter-in-law, SueAnn (Al) Collinge of Rochester. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Melvin, sons Kenneth and Virgil, grandson Baby Kitzman, sisters Fern Flom, Elaine Walsh, Jane Aase, Marian McVary and brothers Marvin Hildebrandt and Roland Hildebrandt. Visitation will be at United Methodist Church in Kenyon on March 29, 2018 from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM . Funeral services will be held March 29, 2018 at 1:00 PM at United Methodist Church in Kenyon with Reverend Dana Houck and Reverend Nancy Edwardson officiating. Interment will be at a later date in the Kenyon Cemetery in Kenyon. Memorials are preferred to the Kenyon Sunset Home or Kenyon United Methodist Church.
