Allan L. Peterson, 91, of Owatonna, died Friday, May 5, 2017 at the Owatonna Hospital.
Allan was born January 12, 1926 in Dodge Center, Minnesota the son of Ernest and Lois (Kincaid) Peterson. At the age of 6 months, they moved to Owatonna's south side. Allan went to kindergarten, Roosevelt Grammer School, and in 1943 graduated from Owatonna High School.
Allan, along with many others from Owatonna, joined the Navy in 1943, and after various locations ended up on the aircraft carrier, USS Roosevelt. After his discharge in 1946, he attended the University of Minnesota and graduated in December 1950 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering. He worked with the Minnesota Highway Department for 5 years in southwest Minnesota on various highway construction projects. Allan then worked for North Star Concrete of Mankato for 17 years building and operating various concrete product plants throughout Minnesota and in Naparville, Ill. At this time, he moved to Florida to work for St. Regis Paper, later to become Champion International Paper, then International Paper Co., where he retired in 1985.
In 1947, he married Lillian E. Allen of Claremont, MN, in the Presbyterian Church. Lillian died of cancer at Lorida, Florida, on Lake Istokpoga, in their retirement home, in 1991. Later that year, Allen traveled to reunite with old acquaintences and in turn returned to Owatonna. In 1995, he married Evelyn L. (Martinek) Kaplan, an old friend from 50 plus years past.
He was past president of the Traverse des Sioux and Twin Lakes Chapters of Minnesota Society of Professional Engineers and CSA along with being an active member of Elks, Kiwanis, ANA, EEA, VFW, American Legion, USS-FDR Reunion, USNI, Naval Ordinance, CSA, WFLA, and Steele County Historical Society.
He is survived by his wife, Evelyn of Owatonna; daughter, Lee Ann (and Dave) Goettl of So. St. Paul; sons, Michael (and Cathy) Peterson of Lubbock, TX and Gaylan Peterson of Farmington, MN; grandchildren, Nick Severson, Ben Severson, Robert (and Stacy) Peterson, and Jenny Lee (and Chris); great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; first wife; and sister, Phyllis Ligouri.
Visitation will be at Michaelson Funeral Home on Thursday, May 11, 2017 from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM. Funeral services will be held Thursday, May 11, 2017 at 11:00 AM at Michaelson Funeral Home with Pastor Jim Oberg officiating followed with military honors conducted by the Steele County Military Funeral Unit. Interment will be in the Wildwood Cemetery in Wasioja. Memorials are preferred to Kiwanis Golden K Scholarship Fund or donor's choice.
