Allen D. Buss of Owatonna, formerly of Claremont, passed away, on May 26, 2017 at the age of 91. Allen was born on November 28, 1925 to Rutherford and Millie (Hanisch) Buss in Ravenna, Nebraska, where he grew up. In 1940 his father passed away and in 1941 Allen, along with his mother and family, moved to Claremont. Allen graduated from Claremont in 1943, and at the age of 18, he enlisted in the US Navy during WWII. He served proudly aboard the Battleship New Jersey earning seven Battle stars. After he was discharged, he went to Austin Community College and started work at the Claremont Bank. He married Renee Martin in 1948. Renee preceded him in death in 1961. Allen purchased the Claremont Bank in 1957, and was there for 47 years, retiring in 1990. In 1966 he married Betty Thompson. In 1968 they had a son which made the combined families an even dozen. Allen served on the Claremont School board, was a member of the American Legion, Zuhrah Shrine Club, Claremont Improvement Corp., and served as an elder for the First Presbyterian Church of Claremont. Allen was an avid hunter and fisherman. He loved having family and friends around and enjoyed playing card games like bridge, cribbage, and Back 3. In October 2010 he, along with several World War II veterans, had the opportunity to go with the Southwestern Minnesota Honor flight to Washington D.C. After retirement Allen and Betty spent their winters in Arizona. They became tennis players and golfers and worked at the Club House in Silveridge, where they helped in serving meals. Allen gave generously to his family, friends, and community. Allen is survived by his wife of 51 years, Betty; 3 sons: Brent (and Jan) Buss of Rochester, Brett (and Roberta) Buss of Tucson, AZ, Brian (and Lisa) Buss of Houston, TX; 4 daughters: Bryn (and James) Richard of Oakridge, OR, Bryce (and Jerry) Mann of Owatonna, Debbie Heacox of Stillwater, Kelli (and Tim) Miller of Owatonna; 20 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Bernice Buss of Wayzata and many nieces and nephews. A very special thank you to all the wonderful people at Koda Living Community, and those who visited Allen these past few years. Lucky were those close enough to be sucked into the strong gravitational pull of his personality over the years. He was a special man. We are all better for having known him. May the thought of that grin and the twinkle in his eye light up your day. May his laugh echo on in your hearts forever. Visitation will be at Michaelson Funeral Home on Wednesday from 4pm to 7pm and at First Presbyterian Church on Thursday from 10am to 11am.
