Alma Augusta Vangness, 96, of Zumbrota, died on Tuesday, January 17, 2023 at Zumbrota Health Services.

She was born on October 2, 1926 in Hebron, North Dakota. Her family moved to West Concord in 1927. She graduated from West Concord High School in 1944 and from Rochester Jr. College in 1945. In 1947, she married S/Sgt Robert Hopkins and they resided at Fr. Bragg, NC where Robert Michael was born. Robert Sr. was killed in action in the Korean War on October 21, 1950. After his death, she moved to Rochester and worked at C.O. Brown Insurance Company until she married Harold Vangness on March 23, 1954.

Harold and Alma lived on a farm between West Concord and Kenyon, and had two daughters, Marlene and Karen. Harold Adopted Robert. Mrs. Vangness was an active member of the Concord Church of Christ and taught Sunday School for many years. She enjoyed bowling, golfing, fishing, reading, sewing and crafts. Alma and her husband spent the winters in Arizona.

Alma is survived by her daughters Marlene Ray of Zumbrota and Karen Schultz of Mankato; grandchildren, Jeremy (and Kerri) Vangness, John (and Amy) Vangness, Ben Ray, Shannon (and Paul) Zeilsdorf, Jacob (and Tashina) Schultz, and Jennifer Baker; 18 great-grandchildren, and 3 great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband Harold Vangness; parents, John and Augusta Giesler, a son, 2 brothers and 5 sisters.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, January 21, 2023 at 11AM at Concord Church of Christ with a visitation one hour prior to the service. Pastor Peter Moen officiating. Interment will be in the Concord Cemetery.
