Obituary

Alvin Lloyd Smuland, 82, of Medford, died Saturday, December 23, 2017 at Homestead Hospice House. He was born March 29, 1935 in Yorkton , Saskatchewan the son of Samuel and Tabatha (Breen) Smuland. The family moved to Flin Flon, Manitoba where Samuel worked at Hudson Bay Mining and Smelting, and two girls were born into the family. Joan died of a crib death, shortly after birth, while sister, Shirley Hemerling, now lives in British Columbia, Canada. Al's education consisted of grade school in Flin Flon, high school at Caronport, SK, 1st year university in Winnipeg where he acquired certification in architectural drafting, one year at Vancouver Bible Institute and Bethel College in St. Paul, MN for his B.A. in Biology. Al met his wife, Sylvia on a "Sadie Hawkins" date, which meant she invited him, and they were married October 10, 1959. They have been enormously blessed by their two children; son, Brad (wife Sarah) of East Bethel, MN and daughter, Kim Purscell (husband, Dave) of Owatonna, MN. There are three grandsons; Joshua Smuland, Sam Purscell and Matthew Purscell and the greatest great-grandson, Tristan Michael Purscell. In 1964 after college, Al and his father-in-law started Woodale Solid Pine Furniture factory in Kenora, Ontario at which Al was the designer, manager, instructor, salesman and truck driver. He was known as Mr. Woodale. After Woodale, Al went to Jos Nigeria to teach furniture making for the Canadian Peace Corps. It was a two year contract and he loved that work. After Nigeria, Al worked for Viretec in Faribault for 10 years until his retirement. Then he bought an RV and they traveled until they settled in Bradenton, Florida. Al volunteered for the Red Cross as a shelter manager for many disasters, fires in California, Hurricane Katrina in Biloxi, Mississippi, floods in Rushford, MN, hurricanes in the Caribbean and Florida and tornadoes in Oklahoma. Al was always a devout church member wherever he lived. In Kenora, the family attended Lakeside Baptist Church, in Bradenton, First Baptist Church and in Minnesota, First Lutheran Church of Hope. Al was never a pew sitter. He loved to be a one man hospitality committee welcoming visitors or members. In his most recent years, Al took up making small wooden items to carry in his pockets and give away to people he met at the clinic waiting room, at restaurants, at church and at Walmart. His little workshop he called Plank 'n Plane and he loved when people dropped by while he was at work. Thank you Allina Hospice for the excellent care you have provided. Thank you Pastor Sandy for your shepherding of this unique sheep in your flock. And thank you friend, Ken, for creating the exact urn Al designed for his own ashes. Visitation will be at Michaelson Funeral Home on Saturday, January 6, 2018, from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM .
