Amalia Vela Schweim, 75, of Owatonna, died Monday, January 18, 2021 at the Owatonna Hospital. She was born August 20, 1945 in Tahoka, Texas, the daughter of Zeferino and Emma (Rodriguez) Vela. She grew up in Tahoka where she attended school. She married Juan Alvarez and they were blessed with six children. The couple later divorced. She then married Paul Schweim and they divorced as well. Amalia's main job was raising her family. She was a loving mother and enjoyed teaching her children to cook and dance. Family was very important to her. She loved spending time with her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren and her siblings. She loved to dance and take trips to the casino to play bingo. She is survived by her children, Sylvia Santoyo of Owatonna, Teresa "Curly" Alvarez of Owatonna, Mary Helen Alvarez of Richfield and Martin Alvarez of Owatonna; 10 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren; 2 great-great-grandchildren and siblings, Tina (Jose) Gavilan of West St. Paul, Amelia (Raul) Castillo of Owatonna, Santo's Vela of Bemidji, Benito (Irma) Vela of Owatonna, Zulema Vela Nesseth of West St. Paul, Alfred (Stella) Vela of Mahnomen and Patrick (Mary) Vela of Faribault and other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, Zeferino and Emma; and children, Maryann Alvarez and Frank Alvarez. Visitation will be at Sacred Heart Catholic Church - Owatonna on Thursday from 10:00 - 11:00 AM. Mass of Christian Burial will be held January 21, 2021 at 11:00 AM at Sacred Heart Catholic Church – Owatonna with Fr. Swaminatha Pothireddy officiating. Interment will be in the in Owatonna Memorial Gardens.
