Arvid Kenneth Hustad, 92, of Owatonna, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by
his family on May 10, 2019.
Arvid was born August 5, 1926 to Bernt (Ben) Hustad and Elvina (Meyer) Hustad in Echo, MN. When he was six weeks old, his parents moved to Northern Iowa, and in 1929 they moved to several different areas of southern Minnesota, until 1935 when they moved to Owatonna. Arvid attended several country schools, junior and senior high, but did not graduate as he enlisted in the US Navy and served during WWII from 1943 to 1947. His tour of duty took him to Lido Beach in Long Island, NY where he trained for Mach Invasion Commando for one year. He deployed to the South Pacific on the USS BellGrove and was stationed in Okinawa for one-and-a-half years. In 1999, the VFW honored Arvid, and seventeen other Steele County Veterans, with their high school diplomas including a full pomp and circumstance ceremony. Arvid also served on the Steele County Honor Guard.
Arvid married Luella Hinz on November 22, 1947 at St John Lutheran Church in rural Anoka County, and they were blessed with three daughters. Upon returning to Owatonna, Arvid and his brother, Harvey, and brother-in-law, Rueben Brase, started Hustad Bros & Brase Heating & AC Company, which eventually turned into Riverside Plumbing & Heating. Arvid also co-owned Arrow Tiling and Trenching. In 1964, Arvid & Luella built and operated Owatonna KOA for 26 years.
Arvid was a member of the National KOA Owners Assn. and held the position of East District Director as their KOA was the furthest one east at the time. He belonged to the MN KOA Owners Association serving as President in 1974, MN Campground Owners, and Hiawathaland Campground Owner Assn. of Southern MN.
He was a member of, and past president of, St John Lutheran Church and St John Foundation, past president of Crusader Club, a trustee, deacon, and usher for many years. He was a member of the Grounds Committee when the church was built, and a volunteer for the St John parking lot at the Fair. Arvid was an early member of the Exchange Club of Owatonna, and he enjoyed pheasant hunting and fishing.
For 22 years, Arvid and Luella spent their winters in McAllen, Texas. They always enjoyed their travels to the many USS BellGrove and KOA Association reunions held in various cities throughout the US. In 1990 they enjoyed a trip to Oberammergau, Germany for the Passion play, toured Copenhagen, Frankfurt and Munich. They went on a cruise to Alaska and Vancouver and travelled to Norway and Sweden. In 2010, he flew to Washington DC on the Honor Flight for veterans. Arvid courageously, and without complaining, lived with Parkinson's disease since 2001.
Arvid is survived by his wife, Luella, daughters Kathy (Rick) Ahrens of Owatonna, Connie (Alan) Surloff, Cape Coral, FL, and Nancy (Ed) Thompson, Lake Elsinore, CA,
