Obituary

Avis J. Nixon 80, of Claremont, died Saturday, August 9, 2008 at St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester, MN surrounded by her loving family. She was born January 27, 1928 in Naples Township near Mondovi, WI to John and Charlotte (Goss) Ellingson. Avis attended Waste Valley School in Mondovi. She was united in marriage to William G. Nixon on June 1, 1947. To that union was born one son William G. Nixon Jr. The couple farmed in rural Claremont for fifteen years and then moved to town where William was Postmaster. Avis was a member of the Claremont Presbyterian Church and its'' Presbyterian Women where she served in many leadership positions. She was also a member of the American Legion Auxiliary Unit #422 of Claremont for sixty years, where she was a past president. Avis enjoyed crocheting, quilting, gardening, travel, and getting together with her family at the home farm in Mondovi. She is survived by one son William Nixon of Claremont, four sisters: Betty Binstock of Napa, CA, Eileen Hardy of Janesville, WI, Norma (Milford) Austin of Kaneville, IL, Gloria Ellingson of Batavia, IL, four brothers: Maylon Ellingson of Strum, WI, Edwin (Gloria) Ellingson of Clive, IA, Neil (Darlene) Ellingson of Fountain City, WI, John (Sandy) Ellingson of Racine, WI. Many nieces and nephews also survive her. Avis was preceded in death by her parents, and her husband William Visitation will be at Michaelson Funeral Home on Wednesday August 13 from 4-7PM and at First Presbyterian Church, Claremont on Thursday August 14 from 1-2 PM. Funeral services will be held August 14 at 2 PM at First Presbyterian Church with the Reverend Leah Elrod officiating. Interment will be in the Hillside Cemetery in Claremont. The family wishes to express deep gratitude to the staff of the Mary Brigh Unit 6B, St Mary''s Hospital for their compassionate and efficient care, Chaplain Scott Jorgenson for his comfort, Pastor Leah Elrod, the Presbyterian Church, and her neighbors who were so attentive.
