Bennie H. Shelstad, 90, of Kenyon, died Friday, April 10, 2015 at Kenyon Sunset Home.
He was born November 20, 1924 in Pine Island, Minnesota the son of Ludwig and Clara (Benson) Shelstad. Bennie worked 20 years at Arco Dairies, Wanamingo Creamery. He then drove road grader for the Goodhue County Highway Department for 20 years. Bennie hobby farmed and helped area farmers. He was also a grave digger for area churches. Bennie enjoyed spending time with his family and loved them very much. Bennie was an active member of Hauge Lutheran where he was on church council and an usher.
Bennie delivered Meals on Wheels, served as a volunteer driver for Goodhue County, and drove the local ladies to hairdresser and doctors appointments and shopping trips. He was a member of the American Legion in Kenyon where he was past commander and chief and member of the Color Guard. He also was Vice Commander and chaplain of the district American Legion. He was an American Legion member for fifty five years. He was also a member of the Chef de Gare 40/8 club.
He is survived by daughters Darlene (John) Mumm of Owatonna, Loretta (Dave) Cordes of Kenyon step son Calvin (Dixie) Peters of Warsaw, 10 grandchildren, 22 great grandchildren, and 4 great great grandchildren. He is also survived by one brother, Arland Shelly (Madelyn) Shelstad of Pine Island, two sisters Meldora Myran, and Ruthel Zalky of Wanamingo, and a special friend Leona Ritchison of Elysian.
He was preceded in death by his wife Dorothy, daughter Marna Marie, 2 brothers, 4 sisters, and 1 great granddaughter.
Visitation will be at Michaelson Funeral Home, Kenyon on Sunday April 12, 2015 from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM and at Hauge Lutheran Church on Monday April 13, 2015 from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM. Funeral services will be held Monday April 13, 2015 at 11:00 AM at Hauge Lutheran Church with The Reverend Martin Horn officiating. Interment will be in the Lands Lutheran Cemetery in Zumbrota. Military honors provided by the Kenyon Color Guard. A reception will follow the service at the Kenyon VFW.
