Bernadette Bonnie Berg, age 90, of Owatonna, died Friday, June 12, 2015 at Homestead Hospice House.
Bonnie was born November 14, 1924 on a farm outside of Waseca, Minnesota the daughter of Otto and Uneita (Streiff) Schroht. There was a small town called Barkley that was close to their farm. The family moved to Rochester when her Dad, Otto, took on a job driving truck. He had an accident while working and the family moved to Meriden. For a while the family lived outside of Meriden and later they moved into town.
At the age of 14, she left home and went to Owatonna where she rented a room and worked as a waitress at the Rolling Star Caf�©. She then moved to Austin and married Don Reed. There she worked as a waitress on the east side of town. Don and Bonnie later divorced. Bonnie moved along with some girlfriends of hers to Florida. There she met Jim Wilson Swatzell and the couple later married. They returned to Owatonna and later moved to Rochester. From this union, they had three daughters. The couple divorced. On January 18, 1965, Bonnie married Harold Berg. Harold had four children and Bonnie had the three girls so building their family they adopted each other's kids. She worked at Cedarview Care Center and later at Ceramics by Paul in Owatonna. Bonnie worked at Truth, Inc. for 19 years and retired at the age of 62. Harold and Bonnie later divorced. She worked at the Owatonna Eagles doing various jobs including waitressing, bartending, selling pull tabs, helped work Sunday morning breakfasts and was involved in the Eagle's Cancer Telethon. She worked for the Eagles for over 31 years.
Bonnie enjoyed playing Bingo. Mostly though she enjoyed spending time with her children and all of her grandchildren.
She is survived by her children, Jane (and Jim) Behsman of Sierra Vista, AZ; Judy (and Ron) Jonas of Herford, AZ; Milo Berg of Woodbury; Bonnielou Berg of Rochester; Donna Dominguez (and special friend Dale Levy) of Owatonna; Halane (and Allen) Besser of Alden; Carol Berg (and special friend Lonnie Lane) of Chandler, AZ; 15 grandchildren; 14 great grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren; a brother, Howard (and Eleanor) Schroht of Owatonna; a sister, Janet (and Roger) Olinger of Owatonna; and a sister-in-law Mavis Schroht of Owatonna.
She was preceded in death by her parents; and her siblings, Lloyd Ike Schroht; James Schroht; Barbara Petersohn; and Larry Schroht.
Visitation will be at Michaelson Funeral Home on Wednesday, June 17, 2015 from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM and one hour prior to the service in the funeral home. Memorial services will be held Thursday, June 18, 2015 at 11:00 AM at Michaelson Funeral Home with Pastor Doug Jones officiating. Interment will be in the Owatonna Memorial Gardens in Owatonna.
