Bernard Daniel Hanson, 85, of Owatonna, died Thursday, February 11, 2016 at Homestead Hospice House.
He was born September 16, 1930 in Havana Township, Minnesota the son of Gordon and Evelyn (Thom) Hanson. After Bernie graduated from Owatonna High School with the Class of 1948, he moved to Blooming Prairie to work at the co-op creamery. While in Blooming Prairie he met and married Glenda Kubista. The couple was married November 19, 1950 at First Lutheran Church in Blooming Prairie. Following their marriage Bernie enlisted in the US Navy in January 1951. He had basic training at the Great Lakes Naval Training Center in northern Illinois, radio school in San Diego and reported for duty aboard the USS Valley Forge CV-45 off the coast of Korea. In September of 1954 Glenda and their daughter Evie joined him in Pensacola, FL where he was honorably discharged as 2nd Class Radioman. Upon his discharge he and his family returned to Owatonna where he started working for Owatonna Tool Company and later for Borden's as a lab technician. Borden's became Southern Dairy Association and later Associated Milk Producers Inc. He worked his way up to managing the Owatonna AMPI plant. The Owatonna plant closed and Bernie became the Regional Project Engineer out of New Ulm until his retirement in 1996.
Bernie loved to fish and hunt with his black lab Lady and his children. He took his kids on many nature adventures canoeing down the Straight River quietly enjoying nature. He loved wood carving and wood working. He made concertina boxes and parts for Hengel Concertinas of New Ulm. He enjoyed rock, agate and fossil hunting with his family, polishing and making jewelry out of their finds. Bernie authored and published three books and spent a lot of time working on genealogy.
He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Owatonna VFW Post 3723 and the Steele County Historical Society.
He is survived by his wife, Glenda Hanson of Owatonna; daughters, Evie (and Tom) Grunwald of Phoenix, AZ, Anita (and Lynn) Soiseth of Anchorage, AK, Wendy (and Frank Fork) Hanson of York, SC; son, Dan (and Mimi Barzen) Hanson of Grand Rapids; grandchildren, Jon Soiseth, Stephanie Wolanin, Nicole Soiseth, Krista Barzen-Hanson, Kyle Barzen-Hanson, Kevin Barzen-Hanson; sister, Pat (and Ron) Hanson of Owatonna, Mona (and Harland) Strohschein of Owatonna, Julie (and Roger) Kittleson and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his father Gordon G. Hanson; mother, Evelyn A. Hanson; stepmother, Nadine Hanson; brother, Gordon C. Hanson; sister, Beverly Etherton.
Visitation will be at Michaelson Funeral Home on Monday from 4pm to 7pm and at Trinity Lutheran Church on Tuesday from 1pm to 2pm. Memorial services will be held Tuesday, February 16, 2016 at 2pm at Trinity Lutheran Church with The Reverend Todd Buegler officiating. Interment will be in the Forest Hill Cemetery in Owatonna. Memorials are preferred to Steele County Historical Society, Trinity Lutheran Church or to the donor's choice.
