Bernard W. Kubista, 80, of Owatonna, Minnesota, died Thursday, June 14, 2012 at his home. Bernie was born February 26, 1932 the son of Walter and Agnes (Skalicky) Kubista in Somerset Township. He was baptized into faith on February 28, 1932 at Holy Trinity, Litomysl and confirmed his faith on July 27, 1941. Bernie attended and graduated from Owatonna High School in 1950. He helped with his Dad on the family farm. Bernie entered the United States Army in June 1954 and served in Japan. He received his honorable discharge in January 1956. Following his service, Bernie returned to Owatonna where he was united in marriage to Fran Prell on May 2, 1959 at St. John Lutheran Church. The couple made their home in Owatonna. Bernie was employed at Josten''s from 1958 until 1980. He then attended Vo-Tech school in Faribault for two years and then began working for Cybex in 1983 until his retirement in 1994. Bernie was a member of the Am Vets and American Legion in Owatonna. He also enjoyed going to the Senior Center where Bernie enjoyed playing cards. He also enjoyed working around the house, doing crossword puzzles, visiting with family and friends. Bernie also served as a Eucharistic Minister for St. John Lutheran for those that were home bound. Family was important to Bernie and he enjoyed spending time and visiting with his grandchildren. He is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Fran Kubista of Owatonna; two sons Steve (and Carol) Kubista of Montevideo; Doug (and Toni) Kubista of Owatonna; a daughter, Barb (and Brian) Nelson of DeWitt, NE; a brother, Jerome Kubista of Owatonna; two sisters Judith (and Ted) Staley of Owatonna; Dorothy Gross of Owatonna; five grandchildren, two step grandchildren and three great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, and a brother Cyril Kubista. Visitation will be held at Michaelson Funeral Home on Monday, June 18 from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM and also one hour prior to the service in the church. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, June 19 at 10:30 AM at St. John Lutheran Church with Pastor Dave Klawiter officiating. Burial will be at St. John Cemetery in Owatonna. Military honors will be provided by Steele County Military Funeral Unit. Memorials preferred to Homestead Hospice House, St. John Lutheran Church or donor''s choice.
