Obituary

Betty L. Hjermstad, 90, of Kenyon died Thursday evening at the Kenyon Sunset Home. Betty was born March 28, 1925 in Brownsdale, MN at her grandmother's home to Warner and Gladys (Tucker) Lagervall. Her family lived in Lark, ND and Chetek, WI before moving to Kenyon. Betty attended Kenyon schools from the third grade on up graduating in 1942. She then attended Minneapolis Business College and worked at the Medical Arts Building in Minneapolis before marrying Joel Hjermstad on February 7, 1945 in Key West, FL. Joel was shipped out to serve on a minesweeper in the Pacific and Betty returned to Kenyon. The couple lived in Austin for six years and then moved back to Kenyon and opened Kenyon Men's and Boy's Wear. Eventually they fulfilled another dream by buying an 80 acre farm just North of Kenyon, where they raised laying hens and they began to sell eggs. Betty was passionate about her primary interests: reading, embroidery, and she was passionate about her family. She adored her husband, children, and grandchildren. She was well- traveled, having been to New Zealand, Europe, the Fiji Islands, and across the United States. She is survived by her children David (Carey) Hjermstad of Kenyon, and Peggy (Pat) Williams of Brooklyn Park. She is also survived by 7 grandchildren Elisabeth (Ryan Williams-Carlson, Marcus (Dorothy) Allen, Megan (Isaac) Lundquist, Emily (Miguel) Payan, Tucker, Taylor, and Mary Hjermstad, and 6 great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews, and a sister in law Eleanor Traurig. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday July 29, 2015 at 1:00 PM at First Evangelical Church in Kenyon with The Reverend Luther Mathsen officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church. Interment will be at the Kenyon Cemetery. Memorials are preferred to the First Evangelical Lutheran Church or the Kenyon Sunset Home.
