Betty Jean Johnson, 87, of Owatonna, died peacefully Sunday, October 13, 2019 at Timberdale Trace after battling Dementia and a short bout of breast cancer. She was born June 21, 1932 in Albert Lea the daughter of Robert and Dorothy (Giese) Braaten. Betty graduated from Owatonna High School in 1950. On August 31, 1952 she married Gerald Johnson at St. John Lutheran Church in Owatonna. The couple lived in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan while Jerry was in the Coast Guard before settling on a small farm in Lemond Township. They spent 38 years on their farm prior to moving to Owatonna in 1999. Betty was a telephone operator from 1949-1953 and later spent 17 years as a tax preparation secretary. Betty was a member of Pontoppidan Lutheran Church where she was active as a Sunday school teacher, member of Circle and Ladies Aid and typed the church bulletin. She enjoyed playing cards and games, shopping, puzzles, crafts and going to garage sales. She loved time at the cabin and traveling with her husband to Florida and California. She is survived by her husband, Jerry Johnson of Owatonna; daughter, Sue (and Dave) Jensen of Willmar; sons, David (and Cindy) Johnson of Owatonna, Mark (and Terry) Johnson of Owatonna, Darren (and Stacey) Johnson of Owatonna; grandchildren, Paul Jensen, Michael (and Mellissa) Jensen, Nicole (and Jake) Jeno, Abby (and Tim) Malterer, Scott Johnson, Carly Johnson, Spencer Johnson, Alexandra Johnson, Derek Johnson; great grandchildren, Ethan Jensen, Lily Jensen, Emalea Edberg, Karli Jensen, Christian Jensen, Elijah Jensen, Charlie Jensen, Nohlen Jeno, Evelyn Jeno; brother in law, Hilding (and Eloise) Johnson; sister in law, Lenore Matejcek and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her brothers, Stanley Braaten, Carl Braaten. Visitation will be at Michaelson Funeral Home on Friday from 4pm to 7pm and at Pontoppidan Lutheran Church on Saturday from 9:30am to 10:30am. Funeral services will be held October 19, 2019 at 10:30am at Pontoppidan Lutheran Church with Pastor Michael Walerius officiating. Interment will be in the Pontoppidan Lutheran Cemetery in Lemond Township. Memorials are preferred to Pontoppidan Cemetery Fund or to the donor's choice.
