Betty Louise Thon, 87, of Owatonna, died Friday, January 5, 2018 at Owatonna Hospital. She was born August 11, 1930 in Blooming Grove Township the daughter of Dirk and Laura (Brune) Terpstra. Betty grew up on her family's farm and graduated from Owatonna High School. She went on to attend Medical Technology School in the Twin Cities and worked for Dr. Wilkowske in Owatonna. Betty married James P. Thon May 10, 1951 in Owatonna. Betty worked alongside her husband operating Thon Hobbies and Gifts, Thon Bookstore and Thon Music. The couple sold their business in 1990. Betty was an active member of Associated Church. She was a member of the Owatonna Arts Center and Eastern Star. Betty volunteered at St. Mary's School, Cedarview Nursing Home, Meals On Wheels and with Job's Daughters. She loved to bake and cook, loved her roses and gardening, enjoyed staying in touch with her friends and family and spending time with her grandchildren. She is survived by daughters, Sandy (and Robert) Molumby of St. Paul, Laurie (and David) Burbank of Owatonna, Judy (and Gary) Thon Jones of Owatonna; son, James (and Gabrielle) Thon of Faribault; 12 grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren; 1 great great grandchild; sister, Janet Anonby of LeRoy; brothers, Allan Terpstra of Owatonna, John (and Jane) Terpstra of Minneapolis and nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, James Thon; sister, Barb Stoltz; great grandson, Alex Jorgenson. A private family service will be held Saturday, January 13, 2018 with The Reverend Jim Oberg officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to Associated Church or Steele County Humane Society.
