Obituary

Beverly J. Carlson, 77, of Owatonna, died Monday, November 29, 2010 at Homestead Hospice House. She was born August 7, 1933 in Forest City, Iowa the daughter of John and Gladys (Olson) Etzen. She graduated from Lake Mills High School, Lakes Mills, Iowa in 1951. On June 1, 1952 she married Carroll Richard Carlson of Kanawha, Iowa. They lived in Ames, Iowa for five years where Carroll attended college and Beverly worked at the Genetics Lab and they moved to Owatonna in 1957. She has been a member of the United Methodist Church since birth and the United Methodist Women for several years in Owatonna and was also an active volunteer. She was a member of Cedar Chapter #123 Owatonna Eastern Star since 1973, where she was Secretary for nine years, then Treasurer, a member of the Do-Si-Do Square Dance Club from 1961 to 2002, and volunteered for the Red Cross Blood Mobile for some years. She joined the Hospital Auxiliary in 1965 and was a life member of the Owatonna Hospital Auxiliary since 2000, and earned her 9000 volunteer pin in 2008. She also worked for the Auxiliary in the Pink Pantry for ten years. On March 9, 1974 she began working for the Food Service Program with the public schools and was recognized for 32 years in 2006 and retired in 2009. Beverly liked to bake, knit, play cards and visit with older people. Helping raise her five children was her big goal in life. She is survived by her husband of fifty-eight years, Carroll Carlson of Owatonna; four children, Debra (and Joseph) Mueller of Clarks Grove, Dean (and Debra) Carlson of Colorado Springs, CO, Doris (and Randal) Young of Spicer, and Dale Carlson of Elk River. She was blessed with thirteen grandchildren, Kevin (and Rachel) Mueller, Kristi Mueller, Amanda Carlson, Brianna Carlson, Tyler Carlson, Lisa (and Nick) Stamos, Eric Carlson, Katie Carlson, Megan Carlson (and Andy Stevens), Molly Carlson, Max Carlson, Tasha Young and Emmett Young; one great-granddaughter, Isabel Stevens. She is also survived by her half brother, Jerry Bergman of Garner, IA; five step sisters, Gayle Snow, Juanita Sikora, Virginia Weiland and Kathy Holck; three step brothers, Harold Hakes, Vance Hakes and Bruce Hakes. In addition to her parents and step parents, she is preceded in death by her son, Dennis, brother, Robert Etzen and step sister, Ramonia Bendickson. Visitation will be at Michaelson Funeral Home on Thursday from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM and one hour prior to the service at the church on Friday. Cedar Chapter #123 Owatonna Eastern Star will hold their service 7:00 PM Thursday at the funeral home. Funeral services will be held December 3, 2010 at 10:30 AM at United Methodist Church with Pastor Loren Olson officiating. Interment will be in the Madison Cemetery in Forest City, IA. Memorials are preferred to Homestead Hospice House, United Methodist Church, Eastern Star Chapter #123 or donor's choice.
