Obituary

Connie M. Stephenson , 92, of Owatonna, died Saturday, February 23, 2008 at Cedarview Care Center. She was born January 10, 1916 in Grand Meadow the daughter of Gabriel and Mattie (Aamott) Torgrimson. She was the eighth of nine children. She attended Grand Meadow schools and was active in many school activities. She graduated from high school in 1933, as valedictorian of her class. She attended Winona State College, receiving a teaching certificate and taught rural schools in Mower County for several years. She married Malcolm Stephenson on July 27, 1941. A lawn wedding was held at her home in Grand Meadow. The couple had three children, Judy (and Eugene) Probst of St Paul; Cindy (and Ron) Toppin of Hastings and Jim (and Susan) Stephenson of Trinidad, CA. The couple shared 66 years of marriage. The couple started their married life in Rochester, and lived there until the spring of 1947. They then moved to Owatonna to start a business (Gopher Athletic) with a partner. Connie became active in community affairs. They were members of Trinity Lutheran Church where she was active in the women''s organizations and taught Sunday School for many years. As her children grew, she became interested in scouting and served as a Cub Scout and Girl Scout Leader. She held several offices as Hospital Auxiliary and was Chair Person of the Pink Pantry. She took over the used book program for the Auxiliary, ran it for a number of years making it a financial success. She also drove for Meals On Wheels. She was an active member of the Women's Club and served as an officer. She was a volunteer at the Red Cross booth during the county fair. She served as a hostess for the Village of Yesteryear during the fair and also during the year. Connie was an early volunteer at the Clothesline for many years. Connie was active in sports all her life. She played as a member of the Grand Meadow High School Women's Basketball Team, a fabled group that were undefeated (94-0) for ten years in the 1930's. They were honored by a four page spread in the book "Daughters of the Game" as well as two team pictures, one which included Connie. She played tennis with her husband during their early married years and took up golf later on. She became an excellent golfer, playing for many years in womens competition at the Owatonna Country Club. She and her husband enjoyed traveling, playing over 80 different golf courses in 16 states. They spent many winters in Florida and south Texas. She enjoyed walking, playing cards and bridge. She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Hospital Auxiliary, Woman's Club, Elks Ladies, Senior Place, Owatonna Art Center, Steele County Historical Society and a 44 year member of the Owatonna Country Club and later Brooktree golf course. She is survived by her husband Malcolm of Owatonna, two daughters Judy (and Eugene) Probst of St Paul, Cindy (and Ron) Toppin of Hastings, and son Jim (and Susan) Stephenson of Trinidad, CA. Also 5 grandsons and 2 step granddaughters. She was preceded in death by 5 brothers and 3 sisters Memorial services will be held at Trinity Lutheran Church on Saturday March 1st, 2008 , at 11AM. Memorials are preferred to Trinity Lutheran Church .
