D. Jane Idstrom, age 81 of Owatonna died Wednesday, May 17, 2017 at Homestead Hospice House in Owatonna.
Jane was born on September 11, 1935, in Chicago, Illinois the daughter of Clifford and Dora (Johnson) Grogan. She graduated from Oak Park and River Forest High School, Class of 1953. She continued her education at Wheaton College, and received her Registered Nurse degree at the Swedish Hospital School of Nursing in Minneapolis in 1957. She was united in marriage to John M. Idstrom on October 11, 1958 in Oak Park, Illinois. The couple lived in the northwest suburbs of the Twin Cites before moving to Owatonna in September, 1969.
Jane took great pride in her career as a registered nurse. She worked at the Henry Clinic and Woodvale in Owatonna and finished her working career at The Gainey Center. Jane was an active member and lay leader of Trinity Lutheran Church in Owatonna where she served as the parish nurse for many years, as a deacon, and in many other capacities. She was active in the Christian Women's Club where she traveled throughout the region, sharing her Christian testimony on their speaker's circuit. Jane volunteered at the Crow's Nest and for many Owatonna community organizations and causes. A true born-again Christian and self-described evangelical, she would share her testimony with any who wished to hear it, but forced it on no one.
In August 1957 she and her brother John Carswell Grogan were involved in a car accident which claimed John's life. This incident became the subject of much of her Christian testimony and was often on her mind. She was very proud of her Scottish/Irish heritage and although she was also half-Swedish, the Scots-Irish ancestry was imprinted strongly on her. Jane was embraced by husband John's extended family who immediately welcomed her as one of their own. She also enjoyed the fellowship of her book club, the dinner club that she and John belonged to and her many, many friends whom she loved. Jane was intensely proud of the many professional and artistic accomplishments of her husband, as well as those of her two sons.
She is survived by her sons, John (Sarah) Idstrom of Santa Cruz, CA and Scot (Becky) Idstrom of Decorah, IA; grandchildren, Claire Idstrom of New York City, Jacob Idstrom, Claudia Idstrom and Johanna Idstrom all of Decorah, IA; brothers- and sisters-in-law and nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, John; brother, John Grogan and sister, Ann Kenney. Memorial preferred to Trinity Lutheran Church in Owatonna or the charity of choice.
