Darrell F. Schmidt, 76, of Claremont, died Saturday, January 9, 2010 at St. Mary's Hospital, Rochester. Darrell was born May 27, 1933 in Owatonna, Minnesota the son of Erhard and Helen (Behne) Schmidt. Darrell had a twin brother, Duane, who had died at infancy. Darrell was raised and attended country school in Havana Township including St. John''s Lutheran Parochial school. He was confirmed at St. John''s Lutheran Church. He then attended school at Owatonna High School graduating in 1951. He entered the United States Army in 1953 and served two years where he earned rank as Corporal. He was stationed in Germany. After his honorable discharge in 1955, Darrell returned to the Claremont area where he farmed for over 50 years. He was united in marriage to Darlene Trom on March 25, 1956 at First Lutheran Church, Blooming Prairie. They continued to make their home near Claremont. While farming he also worked at Borden''s Milk Plant for many years where he was also a foreman. He also worked for Owatonna Tool Company and several years at DeRose Industry. Darrell then worked for 13 years in the Owatonna Post Office retiring in 1998 at the age of 65. Darrell and Darlene moved to Owatonna in 2008. Darrell served 15 years on the board of directors for Cenex and served as school board member at District 2105. He was a member at St. John''s Lutheran Church where he also served as church elder and school board member and chairman at St. John''s Lutheran School. Darrell was also a member of the VFW and the American Legion. He is survived by his wife Darlene Schmidt of Owatonna; three sons, Brian (and Robin) Schmidt of Claremont; Jeff (and Deb) Schmidt of Ellendale; Kent Schmidt (and Robin Gamble) of Claremont; brother, Ronald (and Barbara) Schmidt of Owatonna; sister, Judy (and Roger) Johnson of Owatonna; and four grandchildren, Jacob Schmidt, Kelly Nelson, Tiffany Schmidt and Elissa Schmidt. Darrell was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers. Visitation will be at Michaelson Funeral Home on Tuesday, January 12, 2010 from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM and one hour prior to the service in the church. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, January 13, 2010 at 10:30 AM at St. John's Lutheran Church, Havana Township with The Reverend Keith Meyer officiating.
