David T. Howieson, 83, of Owatonna, Minnesota died Thursday, August 24, 2017 at his home surrounded by his loving family. David was greatly loved and a quiet man who made a loud impact on those who knew him. He handled life's challenges with dignity and grace. David said many times God has been so good to me. He was an inspiration to all who knew him.
David was born July 9, 1934 in Kittson County, Minnesota the son of John and Helen (Leggett) Howieson. He was baptized in the Presbyterian Church in Northcote, MN. The family moved to Pemberton, MN in 1943. David became a member of the Congregational Church in Pemberton. In Dave's sophomore year, they moved to Claremont, MN where he attended Claremont High School and played football (his favorite sport) until he graduated in 1952.
David was employed at Cashman's Greenhouse in Owatonna as an Engineer keeping the roses warm. In the early 1960's, he moved to Minneapolis and became Chief Engineer at the Ambassador Resort Motel until 1984. David was instrumental in helping build the motel and its success. In 1960, David also started his own earth moving and snow plowing businesses. In 1996, he owned a semi truck business.
David was united in marriage to Donna Hodgman on June 2, 1962 and in this union two children were born, Jennifer and Eric. They later divorced. David married Barbara Law on May 27, 2004 and made their home in Owatonna.
He is survived by his wife, Barbara Law-Howieson of Owatonna; daughter, Jennifer (and Jason) Lenz of St. Michael, MN; son, Eric Howieson of Fort Worth, TX; grandchildren, Courtney Howieson, Hunter and Peyton Lenz; brothers, Chuck (and Marilyn) Howieson of Des Moines, IA, Paul Howieson of Owatonna, Larry (and Christie) Howieson of Crystal, MN; sisters, Ruth Murray of Claremont, Shirley (and Gene) Nelsen of St. Peter, MN, Karen (and Don) Owen of Urbandale, IA, Judy (and Harlan) Remington of Janesville, MN; brother-in-law, James Boeke of Denham Springs, LA; many nieces, nephews and extended family.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers and sisters-in-law; James (and Marcella), William Andrew (and Jean), John (and Shirleen), and Ronald Howieson; sister, Grace Boeke; brother-in-law, Dick Murray.
Visitation will be at Michaelson Funeral Home, Owatonna on Sunday, August 27, 2017 from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM and at First Presbyterian Church on Monday from 9:30 AM to 10:30 AM. Funeral services will be held Monday, August 28, 2017 at 10:30 AM at First Presbyterian Church, Claremont with Chaplain Tom Franklin officiating. Interment will be in the Hillside Cemetery in Claremont. Memorials are preferred to First Presbyterian Church, Claremont or Alzheimer's Association.
