Debra Kay Nelson, 57, passed away in her sleep early Wednesday morning, June 17, 2020, at her REM residence. Debbie was born April 17, 1963, at the Owatonna Hospital. The daughter of Harold and Margaret (Arndt) Nelson.
Debbie was born with Downs Syndrome at a time when her doctors and medical community said she would not live beyond the age of five and never walk or talk. Debbie outlived all them! A joy to all her caregivers, work colleagues and family members. She was a favorite amongst her nephews and nieces with her teasing, laughter and sometimes language. She enjoyed shopping, movies, going out to eat and visiting with her siblings. One of her favorite restaurants was The Kernel where she always had salad, onion rings, chicken fingers, pop and a slice of chocolate pie to go. When visiting family members, she always asked for chips, dip and pop before any meal.
Debbie was a resident and student of the Laura Baker School in Northfield. She graduated from Owatonna High School at age 21 with her special certificate. Debbie worked at Cedar Valley Services for years and was very proud of the envelope checking she did for Federated Insurance.
She is survived by her sister, Barb (Marv) Kubat of Owatonna; brothers, Dave (Lois) of Medford, Jim (Janet) Nelson of Owatonna and numerous nieces and nephews and great nieces and great nephews. Debbie was preceded in death by her parents and sister, Karen.
A private memorial service will be held at Michaelson Funeral Home with Pastor Ron Gilthvedt officiating. Interment will be in the St. John Cemetery in Owatonna. The family would like to thank all the REM staff and caretakers who so lovingly supported Deb these many years.
