Donald Richard Dalen, 92, of Owatonna, died Monday, August 20, 2018 at Homestead Hospice House.
He was born December 12, 1925 in Tunsberg Township the son of Clarence and Celesta (Glemmen) Dalen. Don served in the US Navy from 1943 - 1945. After his service, Don worked for King Company and for the government in Greenland. Don married Jean Johnston on August 12, 1944 and the couple had five children. On August 17, 1987, Don married Joan Nelson at Trinity Lutheran Church in Owatonna. He worked as a custodian for Owatonna Public Schools for over 31 years and worked nights at Baldus Texaco. In retirement, he worked with Bud Baldus building rock tumblers at Uncle Tom's Antiques and also worked for Owatonna Groundsmasters.
He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church where he ushered for over 50 years. He was also a member of the Eagles, VFW and American Legion. Don loved fishing, hunting and playing cards. Cribbage and solitaire were among his favorite games to play. Spending time with his family was most important to Don.
He is survived by his wife, Joan Dalen of Owatonna; children, Norma Jean (and Duane) Schrupp of Cleveland, Richard (and Joanne Nystrom) Dalen of Boone, IA, Russell Dalen of Owatonna, Celeste Kempka of Highland, CA, Robin (and Rodney) Stoen of Blooming Prairie, Kevin Nelson of Owatonna, Jamie (and Tom) Sweet of Owatonna, Dean Nelson of Owatonna; 15 grandchildren; 29 great grandchildren; sisters, Genevieve Baldus of Montevideo, LaVonne Blake of San Diego, CA; brother, DuWayne (and Joan) Dalen of Mason City, IA and nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by brother, Carlyle Dalen; grandson, Troy Thompson; great grandson, Aaron Kraay. Also preceded in death by Joan's children, Timothy Nelson and Susan Ballstadt.
Visitation will be at Michaelson Funeral Home on Thursday from 5pm to 7pm and on Friday from 10am to 11am. Funeral services will be held August 24, 2018 at 11am at Michaelson Funeral Home with The Reverend Amanda Weinkauf officiating. Interment will be in the Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery in Montevideo.
