Obituary

Donald A. Dostal, 92, of West Concord, died Sunday, June 15, 2014. Donald was born June 21, 1921 in Havana Township, Minnesota the son of John and Josephine (Jirousek) Dostal. He attended District 11 School and then helped on the family farm with his father. He entered the United States Army on October 8, 1942 and served with the 744 Tank Battalion during WWII. Donald served overseas and participated in five battles including Utah Beach in Normandy, France, Ardennes, Rhineland, Central Europe and the Battle of the Bulge. He received five major battle stars and received his honorable discharge on November 11, 1945. He then attended college for two years studying agriculture. After his service he moved to Owatonna where he met Lorraine Schlobohm. The couple was united in marriage on April 9, 1947 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Medford. They farmed in Ellington Township and still resided on the farm. He also worked for Borden's Dairy, Jacques Seed Co, Schumann Seed and Kimber Chik Hatchery of New Prague. In 2010, Donald flew on the Honor Flight to Washington DC. He and Lorraine enjoyed square dancing and were charter members of the Steele Steppers Square Dance Club in Owatonna as well as the Wagon Wheel Square Dance Club in Kenyon. He also enjoyed reading and loved math. He was an active member of Peace Lutheran Church in Claremont. He is survived by his wife of 67 years Lorraine Dostal of West Concord; a brother, Wencl Dostal of Owatonna; and many nephews and nieces. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Harry (and Margaret) Dostal; John (and Elizabeth) Dostal; four sisters, Josephine (and Robert) Panzer; Elsie (and Dewain) Baker; Mabel (and Selmer) Miller; Margaret (and Arthur) Boeke; and a sister-in-law, Marian Dostal. Visitation will be at Michaelson Funeral Home on Wednesday, June 18, 2014 from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM and one hour prior to the service in the church. Funeral services will be held Thursday, June 19, 2014 at 11:00 AM at Peace Lutheran Church in Claremont with The Reverend Alan Broadwell officiating. Interment will be in the Meadow Ridge Memorial Park in Faribault. Military honors will be provided by the Steele County Military Funeral Unit.
