Donald Martin Matthes, 82, of Owatonna, died Sunday, July 21, 2019 at Koda Living Community.
He was born January 5, 1937 in Owatonna the son of Lloyd and Agnes (Pirkl) Matthes. Don graduated from Owatonna High School. He served in the US Army from 1957-1958. Don returned from the Army to farm on the family farm where he now has lived for 82 years. Don talked often about his fond memories of his nephews, Jerry and Tom, spending their summers helping milk cows, bale hay and drive tractors on the farm. In the late 1980's he rented out his land and started driving truck for Cenex/Land O' Lakes Agronomy where he received numerous awards for safe driving. Don later retired from Cenex.
Don was a member of Farmers Union Milk Marketing Co-op, Future Farmer Vocational FFA, Eagles Club, and Board of Achievement in Agronomic Training. He was also a long time member of AA. He loved dogs and had several. His favorite dog was the West Highland Terrier. Don loved NASCAR racing. He attended the Daytona 500 race in Florida as well as races in Texas, Arizona and other states. He loved old time music, dancing and collecting model cars and tractors. Don was a very kind and helping person that will be greatly missed by many family members and friends.
He is survived by his sister, Darlene (and Roger) Rishavy of Rochester; brother, Robert Matthes of Lakeville and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his brother, Lloyd Matthes, Jr.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, July 25, 2019 at Michaelson Funeral Home at 10:30am with visitation one hour prior to the service. Interment will be in the Owatonna Memorial Gardens in Owatonna.
