Donald Raymond Saugen, 92, of Pine Island formerly of West Concord died Monday, November 11, 2013, at Pine Haven Care Center. Donald was born November 9, 1921 in West Concord, Minnesota the son of Alfred and Anna (Sathrum) Saugen. As a child he moved with his family to Beech, North Dakota. The family returned to Skyberg and there he was raised. Donald attended West Concord High School where he graduated from. He was united in marriage to Arlita Evarts on October 16, 1943 in West Concord. The couple lived in Florida for a short while and in 1951 moved to Zumbrota. In 1958, the couple moved to Pine Island where he worked as an artificial inseminator. He then worked as a carpenter for Harlan Pahl Construction and then as a mail carrier until his retirement. Arlita died January 2, 1998. Donald was one of the first in Minnesota to Re-Invest in Minnesota and was recognized by the Soil and Water District for the planting of 10 acres of trees. He also liked to try his hand at photography. He is survived by his children Mike (and Sharie) Saugen of Pine Island; Bill (and Elsie) Saugen of Pine Island; Ginger Hedstrom of St. Paul; MaryAnn (and Tom) Morris of Rochester; Charles "Chuck" Saugen of Lawrence Berg, TN; Paul (and Julie) Saugen of Wabasha; Thomas (and Nellie) Saugen of West Bend, WI; 20 grandchildren and many great grandchildren. He is also survived by a brother and sister-in-law Wilbur (and Evie) Evarts of Marian, IA. He was preceded in death by his wife Arlita Saugen (1998), his parents and six brothers and sisters. Visitation will be at Saint Paul's Lutheran Church in Pine Island on Thursday, November 14 from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM. Funeral services will be held Thursday, November 14 at 1:00 PM at Saint Paul's Lutheran Church with The Reverend John Torris Lohre officiating. Interment will be in the Concord Cemetery in Concord Township. Arrangements by Michaelson Funeral Home, West Concord.
