Obituary

Donna M Ronning, 86, of Kenyon, died Thursday, January 7, 2016 at Kenyon Sunset Home. Donna Mae Knowlton was born November 22, 1929 to Perry and Agnes (Halverson) Knowlton in Faribault, Minnesota. When Donna was in third grade her family moved to Kenyon. Donna spent the rest of her school years in Kenyon where she was a cheerleader in High School. To earn money she worked in the family restaurant and as a pinsetter in the Kenyon bowling alley. Post high school she worked at the grain exchange in Minneapolis. She also worked for a short period at a bank in California. It was on a train trip back to Minnesota that she met David Humphries who was on leave and headed home to South Carolina. They corresponded, courted and then married. They had one son David Michael. Tragedy struck while the family was stationed in Paris, France, David Sr. perished in a car accident. Donna and her son returned to Minnesota to be with her family. Several years later Donna married Norton Ronning on August 19, 1962. Norton adopted David as his own son the following year. They remodeled the Ronning family farmhouse in Kenyon where they lived until 2009 when they moved into town. Donna and Norton were married for 49 years, until his death in 2011. Reading was one of Donna's favorite pastimes, she volunteered at Kenyon's library for many years. Golf was another passion and she played until she couldn't walk the course any longer. She spent many, many hours gardening and bird watching. She belonged to VFW Auxiliary, the Ladies Aid at First Lutheran Church, Eastern Star, and the Kenyon Historical Society where she remained active into her late 70's. Donna enjoyed playing cards and participated in Bridge Club for many years, later in life she took up cribbage through Community Ed. Donna is survived by her only child David (and Kaye) Ronning of Lakeville; two granddaughters, Michelle (and Christopher) Stanke of Kenyon, Nichole (and David) Romagna of St. Petersburg, FL; five great grandchildren, RaeAnn (and Aaron) Bishop, Mariah Stanke, Erica Stanke, Hunter Stanke and Rocco Romagna; one great great granddaughter, Freya Bishop; sister-in-law, LaVae Knowlton and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; husbands, David Humphries and Norton Ronning; siblings, Claire, Gene, and Patricia (Ulen). Visitation will be at Michaelson Funeral Home, Kenyon on Thursday from 4pm to 7pm and at First Evangelical Lutheran Church, Kenyon on Friday from 1pm to 2pm. Memorial services will be held Friday, January 15, 2016 at 2pm at First Evangelical Lutheran Church with The Reverend Luther Mathsen officiating. Interment will be in the Kenyon Cemetery in Kenyon. In lieu of flowers, please donate to the Kenyon Historical Society, the Kenyon Library or to the donor's choice in Donna's name.
