Doris Kathyrn (Willert) Krause, age 90, of New Richland Care Center and formerly of Hope, died August 20, 2020 at New Richland Care Center.
Doris was born on March 21, 1930 at her parent's family farm in Lemond Township of Steele County. She was the daughter of Herman and Louise (Utpadel) Willert. Doris attended grades 1-8 at rural school District #70 at Berlin, then on to Ellendale High School to graduate in 1947. She then started her teacher's training in Austin. Doris continued training in Mankato receiving a bachelor's degree in elementary education in 1967. After teaching in several rural schools, she went to teach 4th grade at Medford Public School. In 1979, Doris obtained her Master of Science Degree in Developmental Reading.
Doris Willert married Richard Krause on June 20, 1950. They had two children, James and Julene. Doris and Richard both retired in 1988. Doris from teaching which she dearly loved. She showed her students how much she cared about them and how important their reading could be for them. Richard sold the Krause Feed & Supplies store to their son James which gave them time for enjoyable trips and lots of fishing at Lake Emily where they spent summers at their travel trailer.
Doris loved to cook and bake. One of her specialties was caramel-pecan rolls. She won prizes for her baking at the Steele County Fair until 2013 when she was no longer able to do it. Doris retained her membership at Zion Lutheran Church of Lemond Township all her life. Earlier years teaching Sunday School, later years doing quilting projects. Doris often said how much she cherished her faith, her family and her friends and former students. One of which is Jim David of Ellendale. He was her first student in first grade in 1948 and visited on holidays with a card and treats.
She is survived by son, James (and friend Marge Gruhlke) Krause of Hope; granddaughters, Breanna Wheeler of Northfield, Dara (and Dan) Bishop of New Prague; great grandchildren, Owen & Everett, Alaina & Annie. Also surviving are several nieces and nephews including Deb Willert of Ellendale who was a great help with Julene who had cerebral palsy; other relatives including Dennis Krause and family of rural Faribault; cousins, Laura Trubenbach of Waseca, Roland (and Betty) Krenke of Owatonna, Lois (and Leonard) Marquardt of Dodge Center, Karen Hines of Owatonna, David (and Linda) Madson of Devil's Lake, ND plus many other relatives and friends.
Doris was preceded in death by her husband, Richard in 1999; daughter, Julene in 2018; parents, Herman and Louise Willert and in-laws, Ervin and Esther Krause; brother, Duane (and Eleanor) Willert and sister, Arlene (and Laverne)) Braaten.
Graveside funeral services will be held August 24, 2020 at 10:30 AM at Zion Lutheran Cemetery with visitation one half hour prior to the service. Interment will be in the Zion Lutheran Cemetery in Lemond Township. Memorials are preferred to Zion Lutheran Church Cemetery of Ellendale or to the donor's choice. Blessed be her memory!
