Douglas James Steenhard, 69, of Kenyon, died Saturday, March 23, 2019 at Abbott Northwestern Hospital.
He was born October 27, 1949 in Buffalo Center, Iowa the son of Alfred and Shirley (Steinberg) Steenhard. Doug graduated from high school in Thompson, IA with the class of 1968. He served in the US Navy from Jan 1969 to Dec 1972. A portion of his service was aboard the USS Kansas City (LCS-22) in Vietnam. During his service he was awarded the Vietnam Service Medal with 2 Bronze Stars. On October 12, 1974 he married Deborah Skelly. The couple lived in Mankato until 1988 when they moved to Faribault. In 2005 they moved to Kenyon. During those years Doug enjoyed a career with Northern States Power, now known as Xcel Energy retiring after more than 33 years of service. In retirement Doug enjoyed working as a delivery driver for Donahue's and loved driving the van for Rice County taking veterans to the VA Hospital.
Doug was a member of the American Legion for 36 years, VFW in Faribault and Kenyon as well as the Moose Lodge in Faribault. He enjoyed reading, being outdoors, watching wildlife and doing yardwork. Doug cherished his time with his grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife, Deborah Steenhard of Kenyon; daughters, Laura Barrett of St. Louis Park, Melissa (and Ben) Bauer of Eagan, Katie (and Tobin) Hempel of Maple Grove; grandchildren, Jack Bauer, Owen Bauer, Meara Hempel, Kellan Hempel; mother, Shirley Steenhard of Britt, IA; sister, Donna (and Dave) Stine of Davisburg, MI; sister-in-law, Marcia Steenhard of Rochester; Thelma Steenhard and many other cousins, aunts, nieces and nephews. Doug is also survived by his father and mother-in-law, Floyd and Delpha Skelly; brothers-in-law, Steve (and Pam) Skelly, Scott (and Brenda) Skelly; sisters-in-law, Gail (and Bruce) Connelly, Sue Skelly.
He was preceded in death by father, Alfred Steenhard; brothers, Harlan Steenhard, Roy Allen Steenhard; brother-in-law, Russ Skelly.
Visitation will be at Michaelson Funeral Home, Kenyon on Friday March 29, 2019 from 9:30am to 12:00pm with a lunch following at the Kenyon VFW. Private family interment will be in the Ft. Snelling National Cemetery in Minneapolis. Memorials are preferred to the Kenyon Fire Department or to the donor's choice. Doug's family would like to thank the Kenyon Police and Kenyon Fire Department for the great care they gave to Doug many times over the last couple years.
