Dr. James Sylvester Hiner, 94 of Kenyon went to be with his Lord on September 21, 2017 at the Cannon Falls Hospital. He was born to John and Cornelia Hiner in Osage, Iowa on December 15, 1922. He graduated from Grand Meadow High School in 1940, enlisted in the Army Air Corps in 1943, and received his wings in 1944 after training at multiple air bases. He was sent to England during WWII where he flew 25 missions in a B-24 bomber for the 8th Air Force. In 1945, he returned to the USA piloting his own plane which carried his crew and additional military personnel, landing at Bradley Field Connecticut. He was to be retrained to fly B-29 bombers in the Pacific when the war ended. After the war ended, he attended Austin Junior College for a year before transferring to the University of Minnesota College of Dentistry. Upon graduation in 1952, Jim began practicing Dentistry in Kenyon for 37 years. On August 14, 1948 he married Jean Jetson at Trinity Lutheran Church in Spring Grove, MN. They were blessed with four children: Dr. J. Ross (Nancy) Hiner of Lonsdale, MN, Kirk J (Carolyn) Hiner of Kenyon, MN, Rae Ann (Donald) Swanson of Monticello, MN and Beth R (Robert) Baribeau of New Prague, MN. The grandchildren are John (Emily) Hiner, Krista Hiner, Evan and Jamie Hiner, Caitlin (Beau) Larson, Taylor (Brittney) Swanson, Mitchell (Francie) Swanson, Jack and Claire Baribeau. Great-grandchildren are Audrey and Thomas Hiner. Jim stayed very busy in his free time with projects. He built a couple of boats and many pieces of furniture for his family. He was always interested in aviation as a child building model airplanes. After retiring in 1988, his models became larger, restoring a PT-19 (the first plane he flew in WWII training) and renovated a Beech Bonanza. He and his son have built 5 experimental aircraft (Zenith 300, CH 750 STOL, RV6, RV10, and a Murphy Rebel Float Plane). He was a lifetime member of the Experimental Aircraft Association and attended every single EAA airshow in Oshkosh, Wisconsin. He was an avid reader of books and magazines about WWII, Sports and Westerns. Jim loved sports, especially the ones that his kids and grandchildren were in and followed and supported them every step of the way. He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Cornelia Hiner; his step-father, Albert Temanson; son, Dr. J. Ross Hiner and many aunts and uncles. He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Jean; his 3 remaining children, his grandchildren, great grandchildren and many cousins. Visitation will be held at Michaelson Funeral Home in Kenyon on Monday, September 25th from 4-7pm and church on Tuesday one hour prior to the service. A Funeral Service will be held at First Evangelical Lutheran Church in Kenyon on Tuesday, September 26, 2017 at 11am with Rev. Christopher Miller officiating. Interment will be in the Kenyon Cemetery with military honors provided by the Kenyon Color Guard. Memorials preferred to Brain Cancer research, Kenyon Color Guard, First Evangelical Lutheran Church of Kenyon or the 8th Airforce Museum in Savannah, Georgia in memory of James Hiner.
