Eldon John Steuernagel, 94, of Woodbury, formerly of Owatonna, died Saturday, July 28, 2018 at his residence. He was born February 15, 1924 in Utica Township, Winona County, Minnesota, the son of Emil and Sophia (Burfeind) Steuernagel. He graduated from Lewiston High School in 1942 and continued his education at Winona State, receiving his Bachelor's Degree and the University of Minnesota, receiving his Master's Degree. On March 23, 1946, Eldon married Gladys Schmidt at St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church in Lewiston. Eldon's teaching career included schools in St. Charles, Peterson, Freeborn and Owatonna where he was a Math teacher from 1953 until his retirement in 1985. Eldon was a Charter Member of the Owatonna Kiwanis Club, Golden K, where he served a Vice President, President Elect and President. He also served at Lt. Gov. Division II Kiwanis MN-Dak District in 1991-1992 and chairperson for the MN-Dak Kiwanis District Achievement Committee for several years. Church involvement was very important to Eldon. He attended Redeemer Lutheran Church where served as a Sunday School Superintendent and Sunday School Teacher. Most recently, he was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church where he served on the Call Committee and faithfully supported the Youth Program. He was a member the Owatonna School District Foundation where he served as secretary from 1992 to 2003 and also a member of numerous retired educators associations at the local and national level. Eldon enjoyed bicycle riding with his wife in Minnesota and Wisconsin and cross country skiing at Kaplan's Woods, Rice County Park between Faribault and Northfield, Shingabee Ski area west of Walker and areas near Iola, Wisconsin. He is survived by children, Bruce (and Pat) Steuernagel, Heidi Thorstenson and Kristi (and Tom) Sullivan; grandchildren, Brad, Jeff (Robyn), Maren and Karli and great-grandsons, Owen and Eliott and sister-in-law, Sheila Mueller. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Gladys Steuernagel and siblings and their spouses, George (Alice), Oscar (Elaine) and Laura (Frank) Budil. Visitation will be at Trinity Lutheran Church on Friday, August 3rd from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM. A Memorial Service will be held Friday, August 3, 2018 at 11:00 AM at Trinity Lutheran Church with The Reverend Todd Buegler officiating followed by a lunch reception. Interment will be in St. John Cemetery in Owatonna. Memorials are preferred to Trinity Lutheran Church Youth Fund or the ISD 761 Foundation.
