Obituary

Elroy B. Flom, 74, of Kenyon, died Tuesday, April 12, 2011 at Golden Living Center in Rochester. Elroy was born March 16, 1937 in Red Wing, Minnesota the son of Edgar and Cora Bernice (Haugen) Flom. He was baptized at Urland Church, Cannon Falls. He attended District 148 (Norway Country School) through seventh grade and graduated from Kenyon Public School in 1955. While in school he was actively involved in FFA, 4-H (Aspelund Ever-Readies) and enjoyed playing basketball. He then attended the University of Minnesota School of Agriculture and graduated in 1957. He was president of the Minnesota Rural Youth Organization in 1959. He then enlisted in the U.S. Army Reserve and was of Company C 103rd Transportation Battalion which consisted of six months of active duty and 5 years of active reserve. On September 12, 1964, he was united in marriage to Joanne Stoltzmann of St. Paul. They dairy and crop farmed in Wanamingo Township. He served on the board of directors for Kenyon Farmers Mercantile and Elevator and Cannon Valley Co-op for 24 years. He also served on the Wanamingo Township Planning and Zoning Board for 10 years. He was very active at Holden Lutheran Church holding various offices including president of the property board. Several accomplishments include: Friends of 4-H Award, Honorary FFA Award, Southeast Minnesota Youth Cooperative Couple in 1989, Outstanding Soil Conservation Farmer in 1992, and Goodhue County Farm Family of the Year in 1993. Elroy and Joanne enjoyed traveling to Alaska, Norway, Switzerland, Germany, Austria, and Gettysburg. He enjoyed working on family history, and most of all he enjoyed farming and spending time with family. He is survived by his wife, Joanne, of 46 years; children, Valerie (and Brent) Ashland of Bloomer, WI, Brian (and Karin) Flom of Kenyon, Verone (and Eric) Miller of Zumbrota; seven grandchildren, Kayla and Emily Ashland, Brittney and Megan Flom, Lauren, Aaron and Ethan Miller. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother, Stuart, and sister, LaVonne. Visitation will be at Holden Lutheran Church, rural Kenyon, on Friday, April 15, from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM and on Saturday from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM . Funeral services celebrating his life will be held Saturday April 16, 2011 at 11:00 AM at Holden Lutheran Church with The Reverend Heather Culuris officiating. Interment will be in the Holden Lutheran Cemetery in Kenyon. Memorials are preferred to Holden Lutheran Church Preservation Fund or Cemetery Association.
