Ethel Mae Quimby, 94, of Owatonna, died Thursday, December 28, 2017 at St. Mary's Hospital, Rochester.
She was born May 18, 1923 in West Concord the daughter of Paul and Suzie (Naylor) Farka. Ethel graduated from West Concord High School in 1941. She was a bookkeeper at the West Concord Creamery and a health aid at the Faribault State Hospital. Ethel married Carl Quimby October 8, 1947 in West Concord. She began her 35 year career at Federated Insurance in the mid 1950's and retired in 1991.
Ethel enjoyed being very active serving as a volunteer for many organizations. She drove for SEMCAC and Meals on Wheels, worked at the Pink Pantry for the Owatonna Hospital Auxiliary, was treasurer for West Concord Historical Society and was a member of MN Sheriff's Association, Senior Place, Steele County Historical Society, Dodge County Historical Society, Positive Thinkers Club, American Legion Auxiliary, VFW Auxiliary, Southern Minnesota Motorcycle Club, Garden Club, Red Hatters and the Golden Tones. She was a member of the Owatonna Saddle Club publishing their newsletter for several years. In 1966, Ethel and her husband worked with a group of people to organize the Sheriff's Mounted Posse and Auxiliary of Steele County. While a member of the posse, she was the Warrant Officer and helped develop the Drill Teams, Mounted Patrols for the Steele Co Fair, Herdsmanship Award and search & rescue. Along with her husband, Ethel was inducted into the Steele County Equine Hall of Fame in 2011.
She is survived by her son, Timothy (and Margie) Quimby of Longbranch, WA; daughters, Rosemary (and Clarence) Hasbrook of Minneapolis, Suzanne Klukas of Waseca; step-daughter, Carole (and Lawrence) Larson of Kasson; grandchildren, Angie (and Michael) Fields, Chandra Quimby, Scott Larson, Brian (and Sherie Cline) Hasbrook, Heidi (and Beau Oehlke) Hasbrook, Chris (and Ashley Lindorff) Hasbrook, Kimberly Klukas, Elizabeth (and Nate Gappa) Klukas, Stephanie (and Adam) Leavitt; 9 great grandchildren; 2 great great grandchildren; brother, Ward (and Ella) Farka of Spokane, WA and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Carl Quimby; sisters, Lillian (and Rudy) Apfel, Millie Farka; son in law, Robert Klukas.
Visitation will be at Michaelson Funeral Home on Monday from 4pm to 7pm and at Trinity Lutheran Church on Tuesday from 9:30am to 10:30am. Funeral services will be held January 9, 2018 at 10:30am at Trinity Lutheran Church with The Reverend Todd Buegler officiating. Interment will be in the Owatonna Memorial Gardens in Owatonna. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to the aforementioned organizations that Ethel was a member of.
