Ethel M. Sharrard, formerly of Stambaugh, Michigan, died Saturday, April 7, 2012 at Cedarview Care Center. She was born on September 29, 1923 in Gaastra, Michigan, the daughter of the late Gustaf and Hannah (Soderstrom) Carlson. She graduated from Stambaugh High School in 1941. In 1942, she moved to Detroit, Michigan, where she worked for the U.S. War Department as the nation was engulfed in World War II. She married Elwood"Brownie" Sharrard on January 9, 1944, in Paris, Tennessee, just prior to Brownie's deployment to Europe. Following the war the couple returned to Detroit, eventually returning to their beloved Upper Peninsula where they lived for over 50 years in Stambaugh. For many years Ethel worked at the Gamble's store in Iron River where she was remembered as one of the retailer's most friendly and knowledgeable employees. In 2004, she moved to Owatonna to be near her daughter and son-in-law. She lived for a time at The Brooks assisted living facility and then moved in recent years to Cedarview Care Center. Ethel very much enjoyed the outdoors, spending time with her husband at their hunting cabin, on Canadian fishing trips with friends and traveling. She could often be seen during her free time pursuing her lifelong passion of needlework, sewing and crocheting beautiful works for her family and friends. She is survived by her son, David (and Janine) Sharrard of Coldwater, MI; daughter, Karen (and Dick) Sherwood of Owatonna; five grandchildren, Heather (and Mike) Lavarnway, Rich (and Kristin) Sherwood, Nathan (and Emily) Sherwood, Erin Sharrard, Jeremy Sharrard; eight great grandchildren; sister, Ardis (and Arthur) Gagnea of Iron River, MI and many nieces and nephews. Ethel is preceded in death by her husband, Elwood; brothers, Herbert Carlson, Arthur Carlson; sisters, Eleanor Carlson, Alice Carlson, Myrtle Carlson, Doris Rucinski, Ruth Harris, Helen Johnson. Visitation will be at Michaelson Funeral Home on Thursday, April 12, 2012 from 5pm to 7pm. Memorial services will be held Friday, April 13, 2012 at 2pm at Michaelson Funeral Home. Interment will be in the Stambaugh Cemetery in Stambaugh, MI. Graveside service times in Stambaugh, MI will be published at a later date.
