Evelyn Louise Kaplan, 93, of Owatonna, died Wednesday, May 22, 2019 at Koda Living Community. She was born April 18, 1926 in Owatonna, Minnesota the daughter of Joseph and Eva (Prospal) Martinek. As a child, Evelyn enjoyed going to dance halls with her parents and dancing to their music. They were members of the Little Joe Martineks Band. Immediately after graduating high school, Evelyn began working full time for Federated Insurance Company as a secretary, eventually becoming secretary to the president. She continued to work there for 46 years before retiring. Evelyn married Kenneth Kaplan on May 28, 1950. Kenneth passed away on May 25, 1990. On October 28, 1995, Evelyn married Allan Peterson. Evelyn was a member of the American VFW, the American Legion Auxiliary, and the Western Fraternal Life Association. She was also a member of the Owatonna Elks Lodge, the CSA Lodge, and the Top of the Hill Club. Evelyn was a social person, but also very independent. She enjoyed dancing and spending time outdoors, tending to her large garden. She was a loyal friend. She is survived by nephews, Charles (Gretchen) Kaplan of Owatonna and Carl Martinek of Sioux Falls; nieces, Lanette Kaplan of Owatonna and Sue (Stacy) Enser of Owatonna; great-nieces and nephews, Julia (Jeremy) Nelson, Allen (Caitlynn) Kaplan, Kelli (Shane) Bartels, Kristin Hoole, Kyle (Bryan) Martinek-Braley; great-great nieces and nephews, Briley, Kennedy, Brooklyn, Leighton, Harrison, and Verna; cousin, Phyllis Kezin; and good neighbor and friend, Dianne Wencl. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Kenneth; husband Allan; brother, Leonard Martinek; and nephew, Craig Martinek. Visitation will be at Michaelson Funeral Home on Tuesday from 10-11am. Funeral services will be held May 28, 2019 at 11am at Michaelson Funeral Home with Pastor Jim Oberg officiating. Interment will be in the Forest Hill Cemetery in Owatonna. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to the donor's choice.
