Evelyn Marie Nordman, 91, of Owatonna, died Monday, October 13, 2014 at the Owatonna Hospital.
Evie was born August 30, 1923, at Mounds Park Hospital in St. Paul, Minnesota. Evie is the daughter of Oscar and Helen (Johnson) Johnson. Evie graduated from Harding High School in St. Paul. She attended Rasmussen Business College, Northwestern College and Trinity Bible College. She was employed by the Minneapolis YMCA Camp Ihduhapi for over 6 years. She then worked for YMCA Camp Widjiwagan for 10 years where she met her husband, Len. Evie and Len were married on September 10, 1949 at Hayden Heights Church in St. Paul. In 1960, Mr. and Mrs. Nordman moved to Cedar Rapids, Iowa, where they adopted their first son, Jonathan. The family moved to Owatonna, Minnesota for Len's employment at Wenger Corporation in January of 1962. Their second son, Daniel, was adopted from Iowa in 1963. The family remained in Owatonna.
Miss Evie was an active member of Bethel Church in Owatonna. She was active in Children's Ministries for over 30 years, leading Miss Evie's Department. She sang in a women's trio and the church choir, was a popular greeter and a leader in the prayer ministry. Evie was a founding member of the local Christian Women's Club in 1967. She then traveled the Midwest speaking for Christian Women's Club for many years where she shared the Gospel and her life story. Evie also led several Bible studies in Owatonna. An untold number of individuals made a decision to accept Christ as their savior because of Mrs. Nordman's ministry.
Evie loved her family and cooking full course meals. She enjoyed knitting, watching birds, and her Swedish heritage. She will be remembered for her love of family and God, her love of coffee, hosting friends and family, her hugs, smiles, brilliant white hair, and her sweet spirit.
She is survived by her two sons, Jonathan (and Gretch) Nordman of Elk River and Daniel (and Sandy) Nordman of Owatonna; three grandchildren; Jessica, Casandra and Blake; three brothers, Kenneth (and Ardie) Johnson of Finlayson, Loren (and Sally) Johnson of Lake Elmo, Russ (and Judy) Johnson of North St. Paul; two sisters, Jan (and Ray) Braun of Cottage Grove and Carolee (and LeRoy) Beckman of Lindstrom; sister-in-law, Polly Johnson of Fergus Falls; many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband Leonard Nordman (2013); her parents; two brothers Harry and Lawrence and a sister, Ruth.
Visitation will be at Michaelson Funeral Home on Wednesday, October 15, 2014 from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM and at Bethel Church on Thursday from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM. Funeral services will be held Thursday, October 16, 2014 at 11:00 AM at Bethel Church with Pastor Steve Anderson officiating. Interment will be in the Forest Hill Cemetery in Owatonna. Memorials are preferred to Homestead Hospice House, Stonecroft, or Camp Widjiwagan.
