Evelyn Iona Shawback, 81, of Owatonna, Minnesota, died Tuesday, June 19, 2012 at Thorne Crest Retirement Community, Albert Lea. Evelyn was born June 27, 1930 the daughter of Emil and Frances Sue (Schultz) Schinkel in Manchester, South Dakota, the fourth of ten children. The family moved to Wisconsin for six years and then to Minnesota in 1936 living on various farms in southern Minnesota. Evelyn earned a psychiatric aide certificate after completing a one year course of study at the State Hospital in Rochester. She was united in marriage to Joseph Edward Shawback on October 5, 1957 in Geneva, Minnesota. They farmed for several years. Joe died February 29, 1996 after 38 years of marriage. Evelyn was a longtime Owatonna resident who worked at Owatonna Tool Company for 23 years. She was a lifetime member of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary in Owatonna. In 2010 she moved to Thorne Crest Retirement Community in Albert Lea to be near her granddaughter Pam. Over the years Evie tended her flower gardens and created many crafts and sewing projects including several quilts for her grandchildren and others. She also had an extensive eagle collection. She especially enjoyed family gatherings, cooking for everyone and playing the family game-May I. Mostly though, she enjoyed visits with her great grandchildren. She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Kenneth (and Terry) Burt; her grandchildren Pamela (and Bradley) Wojahn, Sarah Burt; Jason Burt; great grandchildren Nicholas (and Staci) Hinnenkamp, Katherine, Zachary, Dakota, Kasey and Jakob Wojahn, Lyric Kozma, Clayton Wang, brothers Delmore and Estel Schinkel, sisters Doris Hammel, Betty (and Larry) Wray, Phyllis Heikkila, Eileen Lamb (Everett Olson), Donna Eppler, and numerous nephews and nieces. Evelyn was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Shawback, her parents, sisters Celesta (Schinkel) Burt and Ella Mae Schinkel. Visitation will be held at Michaelson Funeral Home on Monday, June 25, 2012 from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM. Funeral services will be held Monday at 11:00 AM at Michaelson Funeral Home.
