Everett W. Berg, 83, of Owatonna, died Thursday, July 19, 2012 at Homestead Hospice House. He was born September 20, 1928 in Red Wing, Minnesota the son of William and Esther (Olson) Berg. He graduated from Red Wing High School in 1945 and then joined the United States Army. After he returned from the service he attended Tarkio College in Tarkio, Missouri for one year and graduated from the University of Minnesota in 1953. Everett continued as an Army reservist and was recalled to active duty during the Korean War. He retired from the Army Reserves in 1985 with a rank of Colonel. Everett married Patricia Peterson in Lake Crystal on June 7, 1957. Everett taught in Clarissa, Wabasso and Winthrop, MN before coming to Owatonna in 1967. He started the cross country program at Owatonna High School and also, coached track and taught senior social studies and history. Everett had a very successful coaching career, winning a Girl's Cross Country Championship in 1979 and a Boy's Track State Championship in 1981. He was also selected as one of seven finalists for the National Cross Country Coach of the year in 1979. He retired from his cross country coaching duties in 1989 and retired from teaching and as track coach in 1990, but continued on as a substitute teacher and volunteer track coach for many years. He was elected to the Owatonna High School Athletic Hall of Fame in 1999. Everett was honored to be named Marshal of the Day for the Owatonna, MN Memorial Day Festivities in 2005. Everett was active in the Associated Church where he was an usher coordinator for many years. He also belonged to the VFW, Elks, American Legion, Sertoma Club, and Retired Army Officer Association. He enjoyed conducting tours at the Village of Yesteryear, Owatonna High School, and working on the OHS Museum. He is survived by his wife Patricia Berg of Owatonna, daughter Jean McCann of Owatonna, son William (Heeyoung Tai) Berg of Oxford, Ohio and five grandchildren Nathan McCann, Nicole McCann, Ian Berg, Sarah Berg and Owen Berg. He is also survived by his sister in law Mary (and Gerry) Ackermann of Prior Lake, brother in law James (and Betty Lou) Peterson of Lake Crystal, nieces and nephews, and cousins Violet Jacobson of Waseca, and Norma Rapp of Aitkin. He was preceded in death by his parents. Visitation will be at Michaelson Funeral Home on Sunday July 22, 2012 from 3:00 PM to 7:00 PM and one hour prior to the service on Monday July 23, 2012. Funeral services will be held Monday July 23, 2012 at 10:00 AM at The Associated Church with The Reverend James D. Oberg officiating. Interment will be in the Forest Hill Cemetery in Owatonna, with honors provided by the Steele County Military Funeral Unit. Memorials are preferred to Owatonna High School Athletic Hall of Fame, Owatonna High School Museum, Owatonna Public Library, Owatonna Homestead Hospice Patient Care Fund, or The Associated Church. The family would like to thank Cedar View Care Center and Homestead Hospice House for the wonderful care Everett received.
