Obituary

Fern Tollefson, age 95, died Friday, June 8 at Kenyon Sunset Home. She was born Fern Mary Elftman on August 15, 1916 in Weston, Wisconsin, the eldest of eight children. The family moved to Elmwood, WI when she was a child, and Fern later moved to Barron, WI to attend and graduate high school. In Barron she met Hans G. Tollefson (George), and the couple married on January 23, 1941. George and Fern had three daughters, and eventually settled in St. Paul Park. George worked as a driver for Ashland Oil and Fern was a cartographer for the MN Department of Transportation. She retired in 1979. She was active in the church all her life, a member of All Saints Lutheran Church in St. Paul Park and later of Gol Lutheran Church in Kenyon. Throughout her life Fern had a great love of travel. Her many trips stateside and abroad included Alaska, Florida, New York, Washington D.C., Washington state, the British Isles, Germany, Hungary, Yugoslavia and the Holy Land. She brought back a decorative spoon from each of her destinations, and of course, countless stories, inspiring that same love in her children and grandchildren. Fern is survived by sister, Charlotte (Wayne) Asplund of Bonney Lake, WA; daughters, Carmen Tollefson and Gayle (David) Claxton all of Kenyon; and grandchildren, Rachel Claxton of Kenyon, and Ryan Claxton of Seattle, WA. She was preceded in death by her husband George, brothers Arnold and Charles Jr., sisters Dorothy (John) Manuel, Lorraine (Edward) Badowicz, Carol (Lonnie) Swenson, Gwen (Sonny) Kitchner and daughter Cheryl (Major) Willis.
