Florence Preston, 96, of Owatonna, died Monday, March 19, 2012 at The Brooks On St. Paul Assisted Living in Owatonna. Florence was born March 11, 1916 in Hayes Township, Buena Vista County, Iowa the daughter of Adam and Elsie (Dau) Deppe. She was united in marriage to Glenn Preston on July 10, 1937 in Storm Lake, Iowa. Prior to her retirement at the age of 65 she worked as a cook at Storm Lake Public Schools. She moved to Owatonna in 2006 to live with her son and daughter-in-law and later moved to The Brooks On St. Paul Assisted Living community. Florence loved music, both to listen and sing. She especially enjoyed the older easy listening music and Bill Gather Gospel. She was a member of the Alta Church of Christ and singing the old hymns at church was another of her favorites. She also enjoyed a ride around Storm Lake with her husband or sister Faye. A stop for lunch or coffee was always welcome. She cherished spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Fixing and having lunch and visiting with family at the table was especially enjoyable. There was always cookies and juice available. She was an exceptional cook. She enjoyed bingo and a cup of coffee with her friends and staff at The Brooks Assisted Living. Florence is survived by son, Ron (and Georgia) Preston of Owatonna; sister, Faye Gates of Alta, Iowa; grandchildren, Jean (and Mike) Cavanaugh, Julie (and David) Smith, Jordan Preston, Jeff (and Kari) Preston; great-grandchildren, Amanda, Lindsey, Paige, Dylan Cavanaugh, Summer and Jayden Preston. Florence was preceded in death by her husband, sister, Shirley Sorbe. A private burial will be held on Saturday, April 14, 2012 at Buena Vista Memorial Cemetery in Storm Lake, Iowa. Coffee for family and friends will be held on Saturday, April 14, 2012 at Alta Church of Christ at 2:30 pm. Memorials preferred to Church of Christ in Alta, 505 W. Highway, Alta, IA 51002. Arrangements are being handled by Michaelson Funeral Home, Owatonna.
