Frank J. Whitey Bretl Jr., 88, of Owatonna, died Thursday, April 28, 2016 at Prairie Senior Cottages in Albert Lea, Minnesota.
He was born January 4, 1928 in Menominee, Michigan the son of Frank Sr. and Isabelle (Wautlet) Bretl. He attended school in Menominee, Michigan. Whitey entered into the United States Navy on November 20, 1945 and served as a gunner where he was stationed on the USS Hollister until his honorable discharge on October 8, 1947. He married Marilyn Breault on July 17, 1948 in Menominee. Whitey worked as a stone cutter in Menominee before moving to Owatonna in 1955. He then worked at Owatonna Granite Works where he hand chiseled monuments until he was in his sixties. Whitey continued to work for Owatonna Granite Works as a salesman until his retirement in 2004.
Whitey was a longtime member of the Eagles, lifelong golfer at Brooktree Golf Course, including winning the City Open and Senior City Open. He was inducted in the Owatonna Bowling Hall of Fame and was an avid sports fan, especially the Minnesota Vikings. Whitey also enjoyed fishing, vacationing in his home town of Menominee, and spending time with his family and dog companion, Spike.
He is survived by his three children, Patricia (Edward) Ruppert of Juneau, WI, Thomas (Kathryn) Bretl of Owatonna, and Sandra (Larry) Souba of Owatonna; eight grandchildren, Amy (James) Hooten, Heather (Benito) Irizzary, Amber (Derrik) Wilson, Chad (Jenny) Bretl, Sarah (Brian) Dwinnel, Megan (John) Bauer, Laura (Garett) McKiness, and Brian Souba; nine great grandchildren; sister, Linda (Donald) DuPont of Menominee, MI; three brothers, Robert (Cookie) Bretl, Warren (Shirley) Bretl, and Mike (Dorothy) Bretl all of Menomoniee, MI; sister-in-law, Betty Bretl of Menominee, MI.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Marilyn Bretl; brothers, Donald (Anne) Bretl and Richard Bretl; sister, Lorraine (Robert) LaComb.
Visitation will be at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Owatonna, Minnesota on Tuesday, May 3, 2016 from 9:30 AM to 10:30 AM. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, May 3, 2016 at 10:30 AM at Sacred Heart Catholic Church with The Reverend John Sauer officiating. Interment will be in the Sacred Heart Cemetery in Owatonna. Full military honors will be conducted by the Steele County Military Funeral Unit. Memorials are preferred to St. Croix Hospice or donor's choice. Michaelson Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
