George W. Matchan, 85, of Owatonna, died Tuesday, July 15, 2008 at Cedarview Care Center. He was born February 9, 1923 in Zumbrota, the son of George Sr. and Clara (Korstad) Matchan. He attended Zumbrota Public Schools, St. Olaf College and graduated from Winona State University. He taught high school Industrial Arts, Business Law, and Social Studies classes for six years in the public schools in Cannon Falls, and Pine Island. In 1949 he married Harriet Wold at First Lutheran Church in Blooming Prairie. In 1953 they moved to Owatonna, where he was employed by Federated Insurance as a Claims Representative in the Minnesota and Central Division as well as in Owatonna. After 33 years in 1986 he retired from Federated. George was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, former member of Federated Employee Club, Masons and Sons of Norway. George is survived by his wife Harriet, daughter Julie (David) Tripp of Sauk Rapids, and son Paul (Hope Okerlund) Matchan of Sioux Falls and six grandchildren Jon, Aaron, Rachel Tripp, and Elizabeth, Sarah, and Ben Matchan, and one great grandson Matic. His sister Dorothy French of Zumbrota and many nieces and nephews also survive him. He was preceded in death by his parents, son David, and sister Norma Law. Memorial service will be 2:00 PM Friday July 18, 2008 at Trinity Lutheran Church with the Reverend Julie Malone officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will be in the Zumbrota cemetery. Memorials are preferred to Cedarview Care Center, the MS Society, or Trinity Lutheran Church. Michaelson Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
