Obituary

George Thomas "Tom" Medvec, age 92, passed away on July 10, 2024, at Ecumen Brooks in Owatonna, MN.

Tom was born on July 24, 1931, to George and Ruth (Skoien) Medvec in Minneapolis, MN. Tom attended Roosevelt High School in Minneapolis, where he played baseball, was class president for 3 of his 4 years, and met his future wife, Marlys Miller, in the percussion section of the school orchestra. Both Tom and Marlys graduated from Roosevelt in 1949. They were married in Minneapolis on Sept. 12, 1953. Tom attended the University of Minnesota, where he was a member of Alpha Kappa Psi business fraternity and ROTC. He graduated with a business degree in 1954.

Upon graduation, Tom entered the Army, serving as Second Lieutenant at Fort Lee, Virginia, from 1954-1956. Upon discharge, Tom and Marlys returned to Minneapolis, where Tom worked for Northwestern Bell Telephone Company as a Security Supervisor. He was transferred to Omaha, North Platte, NE, and finally Des Moines, IA, in 1962, where he and Marlys settled to raise their two sons, Craig and Brad. After accepting an early retirement from the phone company, Tom sold real estate for Iowa Realty for ten years.

Tom was involved in coaching the boys' Little League teams and remained an avid West Des Moines Valley High School fan, even after the boys completed their high school sports years. He was a golf fanatic and an active member of Echo Valley Country Club for 38 years. Tom and Marlys also enjoyed following the Iowa Hawkeyes and were football season ticket holders for 58 years, tailgating with close friends for many years. He was a member of St. Mark Lutheran Church in West Des Moines, serving as an usher since 1962.

Tom and Marlys relocated to Minnesota in 2022, due to their declining health.

Tom is survived by his wife of 70 years, Marlys; two sons, Craig (Peggy) Medvec of Naperville, IL, and Brad (Holly) Medvec of Owatonna, MN; six grandchildren, Kristen (Kyle) Hammann, Katie (Michael) Klamo, Connor Medvec, Blake (McKenzie Holton) Medvec, Austin (Alexis) Medvec, and Megan Medvec; 4 great-grandchildren, Joel & Lanie Klamo and Tess & Tori Hammann; sister-in-law, Nancy Gaston of Savage, MN; and several nieces and nephews.
