Obituary

Geraldine 'Gerry' B. Voxland, 88, of Kenyon, died Sunday, September 11, 2011 at Kenyon Sunset Home. Geraldine Bernette Larson was born August 3, 1923 in Mobridge, South Dakota, the daughter of Edwin and Lucille (Anderson) Larson. She graduated from Kenyon High School in 1941 and went on to attend St. Olaf College. Gerry had the honor of being selected to the well known St. Olaf College Choir as a freshman by F. Melius Christiansen. Finances being tight, Gerry left St. Olaf College after her first year, entering the job market. In 1948, Gerry returned to Kenyon with her five year old daughter by a brief marriage. In March of 1949, Gerry and Lloyd Voxland, of rural Kenyon, were joined in marriage. Gerry and Lloyd owned a dairy and crop farm, known as High Spruce Farm, until retirement in 1986. Moving into Kenyon was short-lived when they bought a long vacant property adjacent to High Spruce Farm and found great excitement planning for their new house to be built. In 1991 they moved to their new home and enjoyed 19 wonderful years entertaining family, friends and neighbors. Gerry was involved in many activities throughout her life, with the constant thread of hospitality woven into all parts of her life. This included church dinners, circle, coffee gatherings, bridge club, golf club and her neighbors. Gerry was passionate for being involved in any activity bringing together her family, neighbors, friends and the church community. Gerry's life long interest in music was marked by her three daughters'' active involvement in band and choir, many years as the choir director for Holden Lutheran Church and nurturing the voices of many young people by giving private voice instruction. As personal health challenges mounted in her last years, diminished involvement was a personal loss for Gerry. Through all the challenges, Gerry never lost her welcoming smile, greeting all as good friends and a desire to know how her visitor was getting along. Surviving immediate family includes daughters, Stephanie (and Murray) MacLeod of Los Angeles; Linda (and David) Hellstern of Kenyon; granddaughter, Siri (and John) Heille of Fairmont and great granddaughters, Faith, Gracia and Norah, grandson, Adam Hellstern and fiance Ellie Lloyd of Minneapolis. Gerry was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Lloyd, a daughter, Susan, her parents and a brother, Edwin. Visitation will be at Michaelson Funeral Home, Kenyon on Thursday, September 15, 2011 from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM and one hour prior to the service in the church. Funeral services will be held Friday, September 16, 2011 at 11:00 AM at Holden Lutheran Church with the Reverend Heather Culuris officiating. Interment will be in the Holden Lutheran Cemetery in Kenyon. Memorials are preferred to Holden Lutheran Church, the Kenyon Sunset Home capital campaign or donor''s choice.
