Obituary

Owatonna - There comes a time at the end of a life when those who have known and loved a person must say goodbye. Gert''s life made no headlines and may not have changed the world, but when she lived, she truly lived. Her passing, touches many lives. We celebrate her life and remember. Gertrude Ida Voss, 95, of Owatonna died Tuesday, March 30, 2010 at the Homestead Hospice House. She was born May 4, 1914 in Lemond Township, the daughter of William and Marie (Krenke) Scholljegerdes. She was proud to be a lifelong member of St Paul''s Lutheran Church of Meriden. Where she was baptized, confirmed and married. She married Walter Voss on September 13, 1933. On their farm in Lemond Township, as farmer and farmerette, they lived, worked and raised their 2 oldest daughters, Ileen and Lois. After 20 years of farming, they moved to Meriden in 1952 where they owned and operated Voss''s Vitamin Vineyard. Most knew it as a tavern, but she called it a lunchroom, barbershop and amusement center. They operated it from 1952 until 1960 when she gave birth to her third daughter, June. While raising June, she also was Grandma to 9 grandchildren. She was blessed with two more grandchildren after June married. Gert enjoyed spending time with her family and her many friends. Her other joys were fishing, camping, dancing, playing cards and bingo. She was especially thrilled by getting the biggest fish and being a winner. She was fun-loving, creative, known for her good cooking and always ready for a good practical joke. After 48 years of marriage, her husband, Walt, passed away in 1982. In 1988, she moved into Owatonna and made a home with her fianc, Louis C Srsen until he passed away 9 years later. She later lived in the Southway Manor Apartments. She spent the last 5 years at Park Place where she made fast friends with the wonderful, caring staff and other residents. She is survived by her daughter Ileen Rieck and son-in-law Henry Rieck, son-in-law Donald Sotebeer and daughter June Voss-Hanson (friend Kevin Gerlach); grandchildren Perry Rieck (Cindy), Julie Bartelt (Douglas), Valerie Bartelt (Robert), Melonie Rieck (fianc- Thomas Fondell), Betty Weber (Joel), Casey Rieck (Valerie), Christie Hayes (Bill), Lisa Sotebeer, Lynne Baumann (Dave), Jacob Hanson (Kim), and Mitchell Hanson (friend Tabey Kaiser); twenty-two great-grandchildren and eight great-great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her infant brother and sister, and two brothers Harold and Ernest Scholljegerdeds, her husband, Walter Voss, fianc Louis C Srsen, daughter Lois Sotebeer and great-grandson Howie Hayes. Visitation will be from 5 7 PM, Thursday, April 1 at Michaelson Funeral Home, 1930 Austin Road, Owatonna. Her funeral will be held at 11:00 AM, Friday, April 2 at St Paul''s Lutheran Church of Meriden with visitation one hour prior to service. The Rev. Gary Rusinko with officiate. Internment will be at St. Paul''s Lutheran Church Cemetery. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations in her name be made to St. Paul''s Lutheran Church of Meriden, or Homestead Hospice House.
