Obituary

Glenn Ivan Brekke, 87, of Owatonna, died Saturday, September 20, 2014 under the care of hospice and with his family by his side at St. Lucas Care Center, Faribault, Minnesota. Glenn was born December 7, 1926 in Graettinger, Iowa the son of John and Gertrude (Zielstra) Brekke. He attended school in Sherburn and Blooming Prairie. Glenn served in the Navy during WWII from 1944-1947. On September 4, 1948 he married Elwyn Ellie Moorhouse at Waltham, Minnesota. Glenn farmed and worked at Josten's. He also owned and operated drive-ins, a motel and worked for the USDA. In 1968, they moved back to Owatonna and worked for the Owatonna HS and opened Big Barn Antiques which they operated for 25 years. Glenn was a lifetime member of the VFW, NAAV (National Association Atomic Veterans), DAV (Disabled American Veterans) and member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Owatonna. He enjoyed woodworking, playing cards, traveling across the United States, square dancing and going to different casinos. He also enjoyed fishing and boating with family on Minnesota lakes plus for several years spent the winters between Florida and Arizona. He is survived by his children, LaVonne Brekke of Bonita Springs, FL; Larry (and Denise) Brekke of Owatonna and their children, Matthew (and Kellie Kiefer); Joshua, Christopher (and Sara Estrem) and Sirena Brekke; Lois (and David) Janke of Owatonna and their children, Stephanie (and Todd) Nelson; Jennifer (and Josh) Dalluge; Jessica (and Dillan) McCoy; David Janke Jr.; Linda (and Jay) Rasula of Minnetonka and their children; Marissa and Jared Rasula; 4 great grandchildren, Mari, Nora, Greta, and Owen; a brother, Donald (and Helen) Brekke of Rockford, IL; a sister, Dorothy Wales of Rockford, IL; nieces, nephews and many cousins. He was preceded in death by his wife Elwyn Ellie Brekke (2004); his parents; two brothers and a sister. Visitation will be at Michaelson Funeral Home on Thursday from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM and one hour prior to the service in the church. Funeral services will be held September 26, 2014 at 11:00 AM at Trinity Lutheran Church with Intern Pastor Chris Leach officiating. Interment will be in the St. John Cemetery in Owatonna. Military honors will be provided by the Steele County Military Funeral Unit. Memorials are preferred to the Steele County Military Funeral Unit, the Veterans Open Roundtable or donor's choice.
