Glenn Dewey Edin, 84, of Owatonna, died Wednesday, October 31, 2012 at Cedarview Care Center. He was born April 23, 1928 in Staples, Wadena County, Minnesota the son of Dewey and Lauretta (Walkup) Edin. He grew up on a dairy farm and graduated from Verndale High School in 1945. He then graduated from North Dakota State University with a degree in Agriculture Education and attained his masters degree from the University of Minnesota. He taught high school agriculture for two years in Montevideo. In 1952, he was drafted into the United States Army and served during the Korean Conflict until his honorable discharge in 1954. He married Phyllis Thompson on July 10, 1954 in Verndale. They moved to Minnesota Lake where he was an agriculture teacher for three years. In 1957, they moved to Owatonna. Glenn taught agriculture at Owatonna High School for 33 years. Throughout his teaching, he took Dairy teams to international competitions in Scotland and Wales and earned many American Farmer Degrees. He also introduced and started the Vocational Student Work Program for Owatonna. He retired from teaching in 1985. Glenn was an active member of the United Methodist Church and served on many committees. He was also a member of the Masonic Lodge, Shriners Club, Order of the Eastern Star, Steele County Exchange Club, and Elks. He was president of the Minnesota Vocational Agriculture Instructors Association and member of the Minnesota Vocational Association. He was an FFA Advisor for 28 years in Owatonna. He had an influence on the livestock industry on the county, state, and national levels. He served as assistant supervisor of the Steele County Fair Dairy Department and established the Storybook Farm in 1965, which is still in operation today. He also had a weekly agriculture report with KRFO for 18 years. Glenn loved to hunt, travel, and spend time with his family. He also enjoyed his relationships with children, friends, and the community. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Phyllis Edin of Owatonna; children, Scott (and Roberta) Edin of Amery, WI, and Pamela (and Timothy) Murphy of Green Oaks, IL; five grandchildren, Erik Anderson, Dani Edin, Jake Edin, Brittany Murphy, and Ashley Murphy; sister, Dorothy Sanders of Little Falls; brother-in-law, Arlen Bartels of Crosby; nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, sister, Ione Bartels, and infant grandson, Bryan Dewey Edin. Visitation will be at Michaelson Funeral Home on Friday, November 2, 2012 from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM and at United Methodist Church on Saturday from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM. A masonic service will be held 6:45 PM Friday at the funeral home. Funeral services will be held Saturday, November 3, 2012 at 11:00 AM at United Methodist Church with The Reverend Loren Olson officiating. Following the service military honors will be conducted by the Steele County Military Funeral Unit. Memorials are preferred to United Methodist Church, National Parkinson Foundation of Minnesota, or Feed My Starving Children.
