Gordon L. Sommer Jr., 85, of Owatonna, died following complications from surgery on Friday, August 14, 2020, at the Mayo Clinic Hospital - St. Marys Campus in Rochester surrounded by his loving family. He was born May 22, 1935, in Owatonna, the son of Gordon and Martha (Kruger) Sommer Sr. Gordon graduated from Owatonna High School in 1953. On June 22, 1957, he married Lois Bishman. They had three children and later divorced. He met Marlys (Dierking) Filzen and they were united in marriage on August 12, 1995 at St. John Lutheran Church in Owatonna. Gordon worked at Jostens for 18 years setting stones. He owned Sommer Sanitation for over 20 years. Gordon then worked for Pirkl Oil and Gas for eight years making deliveries to local farmers until his retirement. He was known as a being very hardworking and was often busy doing something. Gordon was always having fun, meeting new people and making a friend wherever he went. He enjoyed traveling and spending time with his family especially his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Gordon was an active member of St. John Lutheran Church in Owatonna where he was an usher. He is survived by his wife, Marlys Sommer of Owatonna; children, Julie Dettmer of Owatonna, John Sommer of Punta Gorda, FL, Jill (Scott Lushinsky) Sommer of Henderson, NV; step-children, David (Kirsten Hansen) Filzen of St. Peter, Diane (Ryan) Wempen of North Mankato, 16 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren; sister, Lorraine (Delmer) Reynolds of Brandon; many nieces and nephews. Gordon was preceded in death by his step-son, Michael Filzen and sister, Betty Caswell. Visitation will be at Michaelson Funeral Home on Friday from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM and one hour prior to the service at the chuch. Funeral service will be held Saturday, August 22, 2020, at 11:00 AM at St. John Lutheran Church with Pastor Dave Klawiter officiating. Interment will be in the Meadow Ridge Memorial Park in Faribault. Memorials are preferred to St. John Lutheran Church to go towards the radio fund, Lions Club in Owatonna or to the donor's choice.
