Harold Jim James Berquam, 83, of Kenyon, died Monday, January 1, 2018 at District One Hospital in Faribault.
He was born March 17, 1934 on a farm in Goodhue County the son of Alfred and Emma (Flom) Berquam. He attended country school and graduated from Kenyon High School in 1952 with his brother Allen. Following his schooling, he began his career with the Goodhue Canning Company, first as a farmer, then as a plant manager for 35 years and then as a consultant. On November 28, 1959, he married Barbara Schottmuller at New Port Methodist Church in New Port. The couple lived in Kenyon for five years before moving to a farm in Sogn Valley. Jim had the opportunity to spend two summers in China as a consultant for the canning company training and educating the Chinese on farming practices and setting up a canning company.
Jim enjoyed fishing, hunting snowmobiling and feeding the birds. Some of his favorite activities included his daily coffee at 10am and 3pm downtown, attending the Sleigh and Cutter Parade (which he organized for many years while working at the canning company), the impromptu Buckshot Court patio parties with the neighbors, making lefse with family, eating Lutefisk and was proud of his Norwegian heritage. He especially enjoyed his grandchildren and watching and attending their sporting events.
He had a quiet faith which he demonstrated by serving at his church, Urland Lutheran, as a council president and on the cemetery board. He was a member of the Lions and Sons of Norway serving as a board member and a Kenyon Sunset Home board member. He is survived by his wife Barbara Berquam of Kenyon; daughter, Debra (Doug) Selle of Independence and their children, Andrew (Alicia) Selle, Joe (Val) Selle, Jack Selle and Nick Selle; son, James (Dawn) Berquam of Kenyon and their children, Kailee and Emma Berquam; special niece, Tracey (Bob) Flom; brothers, Arnold (Anne) Berquam Richard Berquam; sister, Mary Jo (Roger) Meyer.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Alfred and Emma: son, Mark Berquam; brothers, Allen, Melroy and Alfred in infancy.
Visitation will be at Michaelson Funeral Home, Kenyon on Friday, January 5th from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM and at church on Saturday one hour prior to the service. Funeral services will be held January 6, 2018 at 10:30 AM at Urland Lutheran Church in Cannon Falls with Pastor Drew Yackel officiating. Interment will be at a later date in the Urland Lutheran Cemetery.
