Harold Donald Schroeder, 92, of Owatonna, died Sunday, December 16, 2018.
Harold was born December 17, 1925, in Woodville Township, Waseca, the son of Ernest and Anna (Abbe) Schroeder. He married OrVetta Standke on September 16, 1948. Harold served in the Army from 1945-1946 in Manila, Philippines. He farmed in Steele County from 1946-1959. Harold started Schroeder's Cashway Hardware & Implement Store in Meriden in 1959. In the early 1960s, he moved to a new building and renamed the business Meriden Grain Company, which was open until 1976. Harold then worked as a Realtor in Owatonna until 1986.
Harold enjoyed playing in local card clubs, dancing, hunting ducks and pheasants, fishing, and going on auto trips around the country. Later in life, he was involved in the Waseca Toastmasters Club and enjoyed writing. He was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Meriden for all of his life and was also a member of the VFW.
He is survived by his children, Cheryl (Sam F.) Macalus of Maple Grove, Kathy (Dan) Wett of Northfield, and Cindy (Rock) Flury of Holmen, Wis.; daughter-in-law, Kathleen Schroeder of Deer River; grandchildren, John (Steph) Schroeder, Betsy Schroeder, Charlene (Jeremy) Uecker, Christine (Derek) Middleman, Sam J. (Hannah) Macalus, Laura (Dwayne) Watson, David (Robyn) Wett, Steven Wett, Michael (Sarah) Flury, J.R. (Brooke) Flury, and Tara Flury; and 13 great-grandchildren.
Harold was preceded in death by his wife; son, Gary Schroeder; and brothers, Ervin and Wilfred Schroeder.
The funeral service will be at 11 a.m., Friday, December 21, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Meriden with the Rev. Dean Smith officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. Memorials are preferred to St. Paul's Lutheran Church or the donor's choice.
